Its all about the alps, isn't it?.... the air, the disposition, the beauty, and the houses all arranged in rows against the azure sky. The best place to contemplate Moustiers is from this chapel, reached via a staircase of 262 steps. Alas the spirituality is punctuated by the noisy visitors who seem to think that echoing is so cool. The exterior is very interesting but its the views that draw you in all directions. Back down the slope, the village leans against the cliff, a natural cross-road for lavender tourists and visitors to the Great Verdon Gorge. Its narrow lanes alternate with arched passageways, little squares, wash-houses, fountains and humpbacked bridges. What more picturesque, would you want? Ancient dwellings with tiled roofs rub shoulders with 18th-Century grand residences entered through splendid wooden doors, the village is a perfect combo of green gorges, nature, lavender, and of-course, stone. All this beauty and scenery is not Moustiers's claim to fame... that belongs to its faience, appreciated greatly by 17th-18th-century nobility, who coveted these lavish pieces which are highly regarded by antique dealers, with prices reflecting their scarcity and hence their availability. Every year, says the dealer hugging the massive piece that we showed a distant interest in, thousands of visitors leave clutching a plate, dish or soup tureen, but this beauty deserves a home in Australia. Yeh, right, mate! There is something that everyone departing leaves with... the unforgettable image of a star that for centuries hung suspended 135 m up between two rocky outcrops. This is the emblem of the village, its origins a mystery, but legend has it, according to our talkative dealer still hugging the huge faience, that a crusader knight taken prisoner by the Saracens vowed if he regained his freedom, would hang a star from a chain near the chapel of N D-de -Beavoir. Skeptical? but what are legends made of?

This is a pretty incredible setting for a church and you need a bit of stamina and a steady foot to get up there and back down. The views are worth it though, absolutely magnificent. The exterior of the church is quite unique and very pretty. The interior is all rather gloomy for my liking and that lets it down a bit.You do feel like your in some sort of movie set though, Tolkien would have loved this place I'm sure. The children quite liked it too, aged 7 up to 15 so that's a pretty good gauge, cos there aren't many church visits you can say that about. No don't take very small children, I wouldn't.Definitely worth the effort and very photogenic scenery. Yes do go. I probably should rate it 5 but the interior held me back. I'm not saying it should be any different, spruced up or anything, it just is that way and probably appeals to many like that.

This clifftop church looks like it was taken out of an Indiana Jones movie scene. I didn't enter the Church, but did enjoy the climb. The view of the village's rooftops from above at dusk was beautiful, and almost felt like I traveled a couple of centuries back.Don't laze and go there if you're staying it Moustiers Saint-Marie.

Quiet spiritual place full of history. But what I liked most was the wonderful climb to get to this church... so many panoramic spots showing the mountainside village of Moustiers Sainte Marie and the surrounding counrtyside. A beautiful spiritual chapel worth visiting and praying; a starting place for one of interesting trails

The church located at top of the hill, necessary to wear good shoes for walking. After that you will feel a joy.

Walked up past cave on the way up, but didn't realise it was there until we were back down! Lovely view from pretty church.Need more care coming down than up as the stones are worn and even in the dry are slippery. Worth the effort

Short uphill hike but so worth it for the tiny chapel and excellent views of the mountains and the town!

the walk up is worth the feeling and views from the church. The rock path on the way up is steep and the stones have become slippery so be very careful walking. My husband and I chose to take our shoes off and walk barefoot which felt secure to us.

The hike itself was easier than expected, but still the cobblestone path could be demanding and slippery without the proper shoes! The effort was rewarded with splendid views on the most beautiful village in Provence. There are tourists everywhere but the village maintained its charm and spirit. Parking can be a problem, so it is a good idea to arrive early in the morning. Don’t forget to buy a piece of hand-painted pottery in one of the shops or some local products from booths along the main street.

We loved to visit the Notre Dame and particularly the chapel. It is not hard to get there, maybe hard for elderly people.

It's a historic little church and you get some great views over the town and countryside on the way up. See the gold color star hanging overhead -- first put up by a crusader in thanks for having returned alive -- now replaced about every 50 years. Cobblestone path is tough unless you have sturdy shoes.

Lovely views across the valley. This walk was less challenging than we had thought. Just be aware that it might be slippery in rain. Light a candle in the chapel at the top.

If you are visiting the village, this is a great hike to make. The view from the top is beautiful. You can also get a better look at the star hung between the mountains above the village. One thing to be aware of is that this is a frequently hiked path that has gotten worn down over time and become slippery. I recommend shoes with good traction. Several people were having trouble navigating the downward slope, made even more dangerous in the rain. It looks deceptively easy.

If you are at Mostieres-Sainte-Marie or in the vicinity ,you must climb all the way up to the church. You will not regret!!
