this is the largest American cemetary and it is beautifully kept. The chapel is quite lovely with life size carving to scale of a tank and a French 75 artillery piece on the outside. We were fortunate to meet the American superintendent and learn about the US commitment to maintain military cemeteries in a manner that honors these fallen soldiers.

The cemetery is a wonderful site that unfortunately not that many Americans visit. It is a moving, beautiful place that is tended by devoted caretakers. Three Medal of Honor recipients lie in these hallowed grounds. Five brave nurses are also buried there. Down a narrow, yet well maintained road, the cemetery is a peaceful reminder of the American role during the Great War. Don't miss the American Memorial which is just a short drive away--not located on the cemetery grounds. Visit...you will be glad you dis

We came here as part of a trip we designed to visit some World War I historical sites over three days. We stayed in Arras for two nights, and came here before going in the other direction to Amiens and then home in Rouen. This cemetery was out of the way--about 45 minutes from Arras--but well worth coming to (we had a rental car). (The memorial is about two miles further down the road; it's also gorgeous.) As Americans, we thought it was important to visit an American WWI cemetery. And we should--as the other reviewer said, it is important to remember. We were the only visitors there on a Saturday morning. The cemetery is in a stunningly beautiful rural location, amid farm fields adjacent to a quiet little village. We were awed by how peaceful and beautiful the setting was. We wondered how many relatives of the buried soldiers have come here over the years; I suspect not many, because it is so far from the United States. From the guest register, it looks like far more Europeans than Americans come here (or at least sign the book). We saw that visitors came from the UK, Finland, Australia. I noticed that a couple of visitors in recent months appeared to be US military personnel based in Germany. Visit this place for the beauty and history and to remember the war and the soldiers who were buried so far from home nearly 100 years ago ago.

I'll just start this review by saying that the WWI American Cemeteries and Memorials are rather difficult to find. They are usually far off the main roads, in farm country and not very well marked. Do a little research before you travel if you want to find them. Go to the American Battle Monuments Commission website: www.abmc.gov. There you will find all the information you need to find these sites. A good GPS also comes in handy. The Somme Cemetery sits on 14.3 acres in the Picardy Region of the French countryside. In this cemetery rest 1,844 American military dead from WWI. Most of the American dead were attached to British Army units fighting near Cantigny. There is a chapel at the eastern end of the cemetery. Inside the chapel, the walls bear the names of 333 Americans missing in action. At the front of the cemetery is a Visitor Center where we met a very nice young man from Louisiana currently serving as Superintendent. He gave us a personal tour and lots of information. He said there aren't many visitors due to the location of the cemetery. We signed the register and thanked him for his time. If you visit France, make an effort to visit at least one American Cemetery or Memorial. It's important that we remember.
