Last year while traveling from a practice track back to our hotel with TEAM USA MX. We stopped to do a photo & video shoot at this historic place. It has an amazing view looking over the countryside. You can see it on top of the hill from miles away driving up to it. A must stop if you are nearby.

Montsec stands atop a high promontory with outstanding views of the countryside. Understanding the structure of the battlefield is superbly aided by a large bronze three-dimensional map in the center of the monument.Montsec is easy to reach by car, and is very close to the Saint Mihiel American Cemetery. At the cemetery we asked at the guest house for directions, which were very easy to follow. The day we visited Montsec the wind was up and, as the monument is on the highest point, the temperature was much cooler than the surrounding countryside so wrap up.The Montsec American Monument is maintained by the American Battlefield Monuments Commission. We highly recommend downloading their brochure of the monument (at ABMC.gov) prior to visiting so that you can appreciate the monument fully.

I would couple a visit to Mont Sec with a side trip to Bois-Brulé where one can see WWI trenches and trench reconstructions and a visit to the American Cemetery at Thiaucourt. All are in the same general vicinity, Mont Sec being 17 kilometers from and visible from Thiaucourt. The effect is somber, the scope of human sacrifice humbling and the scale of the war fought there is both horrific and difficult to grasp. The cemetery at Thiaucourt is the third largest American Cemetery in France and we were fortunate enough to have a guided tour from one of the site's directors. Before going there you need to check these locations out on a map. They did not appear on our GPS, except for the town of Thiaucourt. Also, pack a lunch or plan your timing out accordingly as there is a very narrow window of time where meals (mid-day) are served in resturaunts.

The American Monument in Montsec, France, belongs to the group of World War One memorials built and managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (http://www.abmc.gov/home.php). It sits atop the Butte de Montsec, visible in some directions for miles, suddenly rising overhead from others. This neoclassical structure commemorates the Battle of St. Mihiel in September 1918 that liberated the Salient from German control that had prevailed since 1914.The location is off the beaten track--unless you are a WWI buff or the descendent of a German or American soldier who fought there, and German tourists are almost as comment as French. This part of Lorraine, however, is both lovely and fascinating. The Monument is a circular structure, open rather than domed, allowing extraordinary views in every compass direction. At the center of the monument, a bronze relief map identifies key locations in the battle, the major towns, rivers and lakes. I stopped here four times during the week we spent in the area, one in the early and very frosty hours of a late October morning so that I could be alone. My paternal grandfather fought here as a member of the Yankee Division. Fortunately he came home; sadly, he died in 1926 when my father was a toddler. The monument is beautiful. Well worth the visit are the local historic sites, the Bois-Brulé, the trenches in the Apremont Forest. St. Mihiel, some 16 kilometers distant is a lovely little town, a little ragged around the edges but filled with interesting places. Also nearby are the American Cemetery at Thiaucourt and innumerable villages that still are marked by that conflict that began almost 100 years ago.

This American monument stands on the top of a hill overlooking Lac de Madine. It is a beautiful piece of architecture and a lovely location. The monument and grounds are well maintained and it is well worth a visit. Follow this with a walk around the lake.
