Confused about which caves to visit? So were we. Skocjan: PROS- less touristy/more natural + small tour groups- get a quick tour outside as well- massive underground river makes it stand out from other caves- get to see the old pathway built by earlier explorers-world heritage siteCONS:- 500 steps and 3km walk (though all slow and mainly downhill apart from the end part)- no food or souvenirs open during winter time- can't take any pictures in the cavesPostojna:PROS- everything is open and well run all year round.- the awesome indoor train (decreases the walking to 1.5km/is cool)- lots and lots of stalactites and stalagmites/different types/colours/histories- can take as many pictures as you like (no flash)CONS- extremely touristy- more expensive + paying for parking- no indoor river/outdoor tourIn the end we preferred skocjan. the river was just really amazing and seeing where the past explorers went was crazy. Also the caves were genuinely in the middle of a forest. However, the postojna caves were also really good- but different. If you prefer the classical cave look, Postojna is certainly the best of the classical type of caves i've ever seen (and the biggest). Lots and lots of different types of stalactites/mites. Bottom line? if you have time, do both..though maybe try and separate them by a few days if you can! Notes: both tours take at least 1.5 hours and costs are around 16/17 euros for skocjan and 22 ish for postojna (though there are tourist attraction multideals which make them cheaper if you plan to go to a few things)

The ''wet'' part of the cave is astonishing and the visit is worthy. It is also one of the best choices what to do on a rainy day. It sure is something special. And the guide was very nice and explained a lot.

Coming to see the caves was amazing. Heard this is the better of the major 2 caves to explore in Slovenia. The guide was great, explained everything including how they used to travel the caves in the past (you can see the old bridges). At one point, the guide turned off the lights completing, very interesting! It's amazing to see the cayon running through the caves. Bring layers and dress warmly, it got pretty cold further in the cave and wear running shoes!Plan out the directions to get there carefully - google maps led us to a random location that did not exist... ask someone how to get there, it should be basically right off of the highway!

I've seen a few caves but this is really a different kind of cave. You have your stalactites and stalagmites however Skocjan has an underground canyon - pretty impressive river carving the rocks on its way - the water noise is awe-inspiring and a little fear-inducing in that dark space. The guide was great: he switched off the lights so that we could imagine how the earlier explorers went about discovering the area by only having a small flame. It was pretty neat to see the old stairs used by those explorers. Impressive!

This cave system contains the largest underground canyon in Europe. The cave is massive and very neat to walk through its almost an alien environment. One of the neatest parts of the tour is seeing the steps the first explores carved in the cave and seeing how brave the where. You must check the website for tour times as in winter they only have 2 tours a day.

Skocjan cave is one of the most beautiful cave that I ever seen, it's a must see if you are in the area. There is free parking and a restaurant. The only things that I disliked were that we are not allowed to take pictures or videos inside the cave, the photos were good for some memories. Also when we exit the cave the souvenir shop was closed, we were the last group from 15:00.

If you're thinking of skipping Postjona and only seeing Skocjan, don't. Try to do both because they are very different from each other. Postjona is all about the amazing cave formations, Skocjan is more stark, has fewer formations, but has an awesome underground river. There is some walking to get to the caves, and make sure to check they are open before you go, because the river had risen so much a week before we went that the cave was closed due to flooding. Luckily the river had subsided by the time we got there, and it was open. The food at the restaurant is surprisingly good.

We went to these caves a few days ago and were both blown away with how amazing they were. They got bigger and bigger as you went through them and it really did end up like feeling you were in the set of The Lord of the rings. Well worth the €16 although at first we were sceptical. Do not miss them if in Slovenia. You can also do a very nice walk around the top of the caves which is worth doing.

This place was awesome. I have never felt more like part of some Lord of the rings-scene while walking around in this cavesystem. There is a shuttle going here from the trainstation in the center of the town, which fitted perfectly for two backpackers coming directly from Venice. However, since we were on the last tour of the day the shuttle had stopped going in the reverse direction once we were out of the caves. Which resulted in a quite nice, although stressed out, hike back to the trainstation to catch a train. When we got to Ljubljana later and saw the ads for Postojna on we were happy we had gone here instead of there, which seems to be more touristy,The price was quite high, but worth it due to the cool experience and great guiding.

there is 10-15 mins walk from main office to entrance of the caves, but mainly going down by forest trail. After that you will enter the caves, whre is 12°C only, so take some jacket. Narrators speaks English, no worry. The trail takes 1,5 hour, its brialliant walk, but you are not allowed to take pictures, so plese dont do that. Guide is angry after that...

I have walked through many caves, but none quite like this one. The first part of the tour is pretty typical-- stalagmites, stalagtites, etc. Very beautiful, though. The second half is the real treat. It traverses an extremely large cavern with a rushing river down below. The walkway is built high above the cavern floor, traversing a circuit around it. Part way through there is a bridge over the river with a great view. This is not a tour for people with a serious fear of heights! It is quite safe though, and highly recommended. After the tour, try the national desert, prekmurska gibanica, in the visitor center restaurant.

I was just mesmerised, amazed by the experience! After a day lost at the disappointing Postojna caves I was impressed by Skocjan. No person on Earth should ever miss this.LOTR "You shall not pass" is something you´ll definitely remember when crossing the bridge.Counting the days to come back.I didn´t plan it well, so transport connections were a turn down, as they are still sorting out the logistics of tourism. But DON´T miss it.
