dobsina ice caves

Went there a long time ago, before it was part of Unesco world-heritage, etc ... Impressive because of its size, the total ice-mass, the long descent into the cave ( after climbing up on the outside ) Can't remember paying more than a few Czech crowns in those days. Beautiful surroundings, etc ... the access is difficult, but it's worth the wile.

If you have been to an ice cave before - this one is not a must. The nature outside the cave is amazing, but the cave is very average. Also note that there was no guide in English.

Another touristic location of Slovakia, so you have to go early to avoid the crowd. Even though it is not so easy to take the bus there, you can check the bus schedule on cp.atlas.sk. You have to climb up around 15-20 minutes to reach the entrance of fhe cave. Then another 15 minutes to buy your ticket, then another 15 minutes or maybe 1 hour to get into the cave (it opens hourly from 9am to 6pm, I think so). The crowd will not queue and will push you without mercy, so no mercy with them too if you wanna get in!! The ice cave is really nice if you look at the thickness of the ice and the transformation which is still going on now. For Asians it maybe even more fascinating. However I notice that some beautiful natural ice sculpture was broken and is melting down, probably because of the climate change. Therefore it is better to visit it as soon as possible. It could be really cold inside the cave, so make sure to bring your jacket, scarf, and a hat if your jacket doesnt have one. Moreover, they charge you 10 euros for taking pictures, but dont worry as you can do it with your phone freely. With PnS camera, maybe sneak out a bit ;) Most of the guides don't speak English well but they are friendly and willing to help/guide you. I dont know the price as I didnt use that service. When you got out, dont forget to grab a cup of hot chocolate (0,50 euros) at the vending machine near the cassa. It really helps you not to sneeze afterwards.

its not a large cave, not a spectacular one, and not a "disney world" tipe of a cave, but it is a very unique a different.we came by bus from poprad. about 1.5 hours ride. and more then enough time to take a tour in the cave and Its surroundings, have a lunce and catch the bus back.you can only enter in groups (if you are not in a groop you will be joint to one) and in regulag times. there is an entrance fee of 7 euro, and if you want to take pictures you pay extra 10 euro. the intention is to protect the ice from overexposure.there is a little hike from the road to the cave. a part of it is very stiff. but there are benches every few meters and its not hard to climb.the tours is guided in slovak unless you are in a large group. next to the ticket ofice there is a display of pictures and explanations about the cave and its history. about the cave: it is realy like diving into a glacier and into time. its not a long cave, the tour is about 30 minutes. but its full of features and shapes of ice. and its cold!! dont forget to wear worm clothes.if you have the time: opposite to the parking and restaurant, there is a field that looks like every field. but it is a small nature reserve of flood plain. and a realy nice place to hike for an hour in marked path with explanations, wild blossom and a chance to see a water snake or a Salamander.

Our family of 7 (3 generations) loved it. It's quite a hike uphill to get to the cave, but there are benches to rest and interesting information (in several languages) to read along the way. We've seen other caves, but never one where the features are all ice. It was magnificent.The tour is only given in Slovak unless you have a large group and make arrangements ahead of time. We joined a bus tour as they were entering the cave, but they were from Israel and the commentary was in Hebrew - which we didn't understand either.No matter - it was enough to just look at the amazing features of the cave were enough. Still, It is a good idea to read about the cave ahead of time so you will get the most out of the tour.There was a charge for parking and also for the cave. I don't remember what it was, but we considered it reasonable. We understand that it costs money to keep up a site like this. We travel especially to see new places and things. We will economize in other aspects of the trip not this.We ate in the restaurant by the parking area. The food was good and the cost reasonable.

I took the bus from Poprad to Dobsinska ice cave (stop Dobsina L'ad. Jaskyna). It took about an hour and the bus drops you right at the car park for the caves. There is a restaurant, toilets and a shop. Then it is a 15 minute walk up to the entrance to the cave. There are more toilets up at the entrance (free too!). It cost me 7 euro for an adult.I really enjoyed the cave. I've only been to a couple before and never one filled with ice so it was really neat, especially walking through ice tunnels. Unfortunately, the guide only speaks in Slovak, as most of the tourists are Slovak. The tour is only about half an hour. But the experience is still good. They charge 10 euro for taking pictures but many people just snuck a couple of photos and you can also buy some pictures for just 1.20euro.The only problem I ran into was getting back to Poprad. The bus service is infrequent so I had to wait a couple of hours. Having your own car would be handy, as there are also other caves in the national park that you could visit.

My boyfriend and I wanted to visit the Ice Cave but were turned off by firstly the parking fee which was pretty much the equivalent of the entrance fee. So we decided to park a bit further away from the Cave and for free. Secondly we had no problem paying the 7 eur fee to enter the cave as it is known to be beautiful and definitely worth it. However, we were not wiling to pay the 10 eur fee for taking photos when in the cave. That was too much for us. 10 eur for photos! Sorry but that completely put us off the experience and we drove back to out hotel instead.

Biggest ice cave near Dobšiná town. Important things is that it was training place for figure scatters in summer time in the past where scatting stadium was unknown. Nice nature around.

I visited this place in May 2013 and it was simply incredible. You will be amazed by the beauty of this nature through out the journey from the point you arrive. The weather at this area is relatively low and windy. We had lunch at the restaurant downhill and surprisingly, it was good. [I guess you would agree with me that most restaurants at the tourist areas serve average food as there is no competition; but this was above average with reasonable price.]You have to walk about 20 minutes before arriving at the entrance of the ice cave. It was a "mini" trekking along the way... but the path was easy and you could admire the plants and flowers along the way (during spring).The entrance fee is 7 Euro per person and you must follow a guide in order to get into the cave. There are fixed time slots for the tour. Unfortunately, they are only in Hungarian and Slovak. We didn't understand the explanation but by appreciating the caves and ice works you would be able to compromise the little shortcoming!Lastly, do not forget to bring your winter clothing. The temperature can be as low as minus 3.9 degree.

Dobsina Ice Caves is simply a must for every visitor of this region. Especially in summer. Temperature in cave is low and the air is very refreshing. One visit of this magnificent cave and it gives you energy for whole hot summer day.

I have visited many caves, but Dobsina Ice Cave is really spectacular and also one of the most famous ice caves in the World. The highest number of visitors comes from Slovakia,...they are returning and coming back on regular basis... crazy? Not! I have visited Dobsina cave at least 5 times and always amazed by massive stalactites, stalagmites and ice. The cave tour is very organized and has fixed departures during the day. The tour guides are knowledgeable and able to answer any question regarding cave formation and history. The trip to the cave is fascinating, passing the forest and enjoying nice views is extra bonus to the trip.

We have been to a lot of caves, in the US and in other countries but none that advertised Ice. Although there is nothing really spectacular about the regular stalagmites and stalactites (unless you've never seen them) the ice is what is fascinating. The summer had been warmer than normal, they say, so the level of ice as lower but still pretty amazing. You have to pay extra for taking pictures so I did since I took my time but it looked like they really didn't care much when someone whipped out a little camera and used it. The walk to the mine entrance is up hill and easy, we did see some older folks having a bit of a struggle (it was after all about 32'C/90'F and about a 30 minute walk) Be aware you have to go on a tour and they are every hour or so, we missed it by about 10 minutes and had to wait. There is a little convenience store at the ticket booth so you can buy refreshments (at the top). I read somewhere that it was hard to find (the trail to the cave) but found it easy. Go. Its worth it.

It's worth the trip! The ice cave looks like something out of a fairy tale. You have to walk up a hill (it's not difficult, even for an inexperienced walker) so I'd recommend you take good shoes. It is surrounded by lovely forests and countryside, and there are a few restaurants at the foot of the hill, so you can spend a good half day there, if you wish. As the name suggests, it's cold, so take a sweater!

If you are in the area of this cave, you should visit it. It is a beautiful natural phenomenon. The walk to the entrance takes around 30 minutes from the parking place, so take care of that.There is no english guide, but the billboards on the road from the parking place to the entrance learns you enough to understand how this ice cave "works". When you want to take pictures, there is also an extra fee of 10,- euro per person.

Cette grotte de glace est très belle et vaut le détour après avoir gravit le dénivelé assez important pour atteindre l'entrée. Cependant la visite s'avère couter très cher au final : Parking payant (4€), Entrée à 7€, rajouter 10€ si vous souhaitez pouvoir prendre des photos ou filmer à l'intérieur. Lorsque qu'on vient en famille le prix devient vite important ce qui est vraiment dommage.
