My husband, Mike & I enjoyed a visit to the Aeolian Islands in October 2014. So much so, that we are planning to return in October 2015. We based ourselves in Lipari, with a visit to the Museo, the former Citadel, high on our "to do" list. The views to the north towards Marina Lunga (where the ferries dock) and south to historic Marina Corta (where the smaller boats dock) & immediately below the Citadel. The Museum includes several buildings and galleries. It is well presented and assists visitors to understand the geological and settlement past of the Aeolians. There is evidence of many ship wrecks and a settlement history dating to Neolithic times. The Mycenaeans, Sicels, Siracusans, Greeks and Romans settled the islands usually in search of obsidian for its hardness, capers and other foods. The Turkish Corsair, Barbarossa attacked Lipari, then de-populated the islanders into slavery. Some of this rich history is well explained in this excellent series of Museums. Another highlight is a Norman cathedral. You will need several days to visit all exhibits. A dusk visit is recommended to the amphitheatre to the south to see the darkness & lights glowing in Marina Corta. By the way, signage and exhibit labels are also in English. Highly recommended! Do yourself a favour and include the Aeolians on your itinerary, if you are visiting Sicily and Italy.

Went on the first Sunday of the month so there was no charge. Excellent collection of local artifacts displayed very well. Very informative. Very much worth the hike to the museum

Free entry on the first Sunday of every month. Museum was well laid out with good descriptions in Italian & English.

I tried to visit several times, only to find it was never open. I was told they open randomly so I can't say if it had anything of interest. But if you want to go, you may have to take a walk past every day just to see if you get luck and it's open.

One of the best archeology museum in Italy! Located "on site" on top of Lipari's acropolis the collections tell 5 000 years of Lipari's story. Schedule at least a full day or best 2 half days. Ad one more half day for the vulcanologic museum in front of the Archeologic. You will get a few more millions years of Lipari's history. Check opening before. And don't forget St Bartholomew's church, a baroque masterpiece with attenant Norman Cloister frome the 11 th. Have a sweet refresment after at cafe Chicco Tostato on main street with the best Granita di Mandorla in town.

It's all nicely laid out but frankly once you've seen one reconstructed Roman pot you've seen them all. Ditto the many rooms about volcanoes with posters in Italian. There's nothing not to like (not sure about the 'best in Europe' claims!) but for us it was worth it to see the lovely buildings, the intriguing layout of the complex and also the amphitheatre. The view over the harbour is the best in town and makes the visit worth it alone.A pleasing way to kill an hour or two before eating.

The museum is very expansive and certainly has more than needed however it is amazing what they do have and a great learning experience. Worth a trip before you set out to see the islands.

Extremely well organized museum with many and varied antiquities on exposition. Price is reasonable and close buy you have the magnificent cathedral and castle to explore. Spectacular views of the city and sea.

one building provides Neolithic to more recent pottery etc remains; the other covers the volcanic activities of the Aeolian island group and beyond. Almost too much to take in, but worth a couple of hours of your time.

The museum contains very interesting exhibits and is well organised. Above all it is worth admiring a collection of replicas in small scale (5-10 cm long) of masks from the ancient Greek Theatre. Full of expressions and symbolism these masks would be worn by the actors and would allow spectators to recognise the character before he/she would utter a word! Also don't miss excellent vases and Tanagraia statuettes. Check working hours.

Don't miss this if you visit Lipari. The exhibits are superb, varied and imaginatively displayed. You could whizz round in an hour....it's on that scale, but if your into antiquity there are some amazing exhibits and it's easy to lose yourself for at least 2 hours.

Neat place to stop as there is wonderful history in this museum and walking the grounds gives you some of the coolest views on the island. Take a morning, hike up to this museum and walk through it.

This has to be the most amazing museum I have ever visited. The most complete collection of all things Roman/Greek. Its fascinating. Do pay the money and give yourself at least an hour to visit all the sites that you entry ticket gives you access to.Do not miss out on this. Nothing on the mainland compares to it.
