We got off the train back from Antica Ostia at this Church. We were just stunned when we entered this massive church. Architecturally this church mirrors the design of a late Roman Bascilica. If you want to experience something of what the Bascillicas of Ostia or the Roman Forum may have been like visit here! We then walked to the Montemartini Museum and on to Pyramid and Porta san Paolo.

We caught the low cost Metro here without problems and as we walked to St Paul's beyond the Gates we observed the "non city" life. I was a bit stunned that no one stood up for the nuns travelling on the Metro.Cheap souvenirs, even cheap shoes are sold along the sidewalk in the "burbs". When we entered the impressive St Paul's, I (a Catholic) was astounded that there was no charge as we Catholics "always charge".It is a huge place that seems to go for miles. There are separate little chapels - some closed to the public - but so much to see. Make sure you look up and see the portraits of all of the Popes - so many throughout the ages. It is a beautiful, spiritual church. One where you can feel serenity and peace (as I did in Fatima) that was somehow lacking in the hustle and bustle of the Vatican. Just in the last few years, next to the huge St Paul's, they've discovered the remains of a monastery built around 600 and they are starting to excavate..........even more wonderful things. There is a good gift shop on the way out.Tip: Don't decide to go to McDonald's for free wifi before heading home. We did this but a very kind employee told me (in Italian that I did not understand, so a Manager came over to reiterate in English) that it was not safe to use my iPhone in the store as gypsies frequented the place and stole mobile phones and tables. This was good of them. So we finished and burger and coffee and headed back to Rome on the Metro.

The apse, the ceilings, the sheer beauty of this basilica is second to none. We had the chance to attend Mass here standing just a few meters from the tomb of the Apostle St. Paul, there are no words to describe this peaceful spiritual experience.

I had not been here in many years, but recently found the church was even more magnificent than I remembered. It is absolutely enormous and awe-inspiring, but simpler than many of the other Roman area churches, which lends it a harmonious and peaceful feeling. Your attention goes to the spectacular apse mosaic of Christ and four saints. The ceiling is also beautiful. The courtyard is lovely and you see the sparkling exterior mosaic. This is a "must see" when visiting Rome, along with the three other major basilicas (St. Peter's, St. John Lateran, and St. Mary Major), and is easily reached by metro.
