We sat and had a delicious glass of vernaccia and watched both the locals and the tourists go by. I could truly spend an afternoon doing nothing more. Beautiful town, lovely square. It really takes you back in time.

A great place to sit, become one of the locals and enjoy people watching - espcially the hoards of touristy people who have arrived by the bus-load. There are a couple of superb gelato shops here too!. Or enjoy a beer or a coffee! Great to do if you have the time.

The building surrounding the Piazza are remarkable stone houses many of which have or did in the past have towers. You can see many of the famous towers from the piazza. It is quite a climb to reach the piazza. How on earth does the water reach the cisterna.

This is the place to congregate and become one of the locals, any time of the day or night. Have a gelato, sit back on the stairs and enjoy people watching while listening to some of the local musicians. Take in the medieval architecture and enjoy listening to the Italian conversations!

careful here-close to gelato place , ATM and the main church. Great open farmers market, but near the cistern, closed in and an unsavory opportunistic element abounds-watch your wallet. Found the city soooooo charming-but this spot was a little iffy

Last day of November, cloudy sky, early afternoon, the last Chinese tourists are about leaving. Few people around, the little town is on display for those who appreciate the magic of the medioeval past. Lovely, charming atmosphere walking trough beautuful houses and palaces. One of the best little towns in central Italy.

Wow. The town center is so well preserved by an obviously proud people that call this place home. It was lovely to walk the streets and meet many of the townsfolk. Very little tourists in this hidden gem of ancient days. This was better than walking the streets of Florence. Only wish I had more time to stroll.

13th Century Cisterna is a must to visit having been modified in the 14th century takes you to this time with the rope grooves carved into the stone well and bears witness to where the ropes used to pull the buckets up from the well.

The hillside view is just amazing. This is one of the most interesting places to visit because of the wonderful old buildings. The short walk going to the town piazza is an inspiring visit from the past. You will enjoy taking pictures in San Gimignano.

We got lucky and timed our visit to San Gimignano on a Thursday, market day. The piazza was bustling, the weather was lovely and the crowds were manageable. Being a part of the market experience which has gone on for over a millennium was a special experience. The line at Gelateria Dondoli was well worth the wait.

This is a must for a visit- a lovely hill town with great food, super shopping and great architecture. You'll pay more for a coffee on the piazza but you may judge it worth it to watch the world go by. Market day is Thursday and that's worth a visit too though you'll not see as much of the architecture and the wonderful building architecture when the market stalls are in place. The food stalls are back off the main drag but are well worth a visit- yummy roast chicken for example! Shop for handbags and purses, ceramics and foodstuffs. For a tourist centre, the prices are very good still. Bargain hard, of course, particularly if you are buying multiple things! Top tip- at the bottom of town, get off the main road and view San Gimignano from afar with the view too.Top tip 2- follow the signs for the "panoramic view". It means it!!!

Sitting on the steps of the cistern eating a gelato that we purchased at the world champion gelato shop across the street. One evening a man on the street was playing his flute and sitting on the cistern was just glorious.

This is a great area to stop and take some pictures of the beautiful buildings that surround the Piazza. The cisterna is also a great photo opp, but there will likely be others in your picture. A lot of people like to sit or stand on the steps and use their smartphones. While it is a good resting/meeting place, it really seems to be more of a hang-out.
