I spent the afternoon browsing the shops along the harbour, it's so beautiful - even in winter! The fish markets are amazing.

We spent a couple days here at the end of a month long vacation; the initial purpose was to find some place within 90 minutes of the Rome airport and some place we hadn't visited during previous trips to Italy. Were we lucky - Monte Argentario is basically an island, connected to the mainland by two thin strips of land, with roads and towns, and a sand dune with beach. There are two towns on Monte Argentario with Porto Ercole being the smaller of the two and to the south of the roads to the mainland--it's charming and low-key with a couple forts and a nice harbor and small old town. To the north is Porto Santo Steffano, a fair sized port, with ferry service to nearby Giglio (the island that the Italian cruise ship sunk next to a couple years ago) and a number of small to medium size hotels and very good restaurants. They have a decent aquarium, several small beaches, some fishing and a lot of diving. Monte Argentario is very rugged and scenic. There is a convent near the top of the island, with nice views. We stayed at the Villa Domizia Hotel and it was great (see my TA review). Can also highly recommend Lo Sfizio, in Porto Santo Stefano, for dinner - we had one of the best meals ever there. People on Monte Argentario seem very friendly, even more friendly than on the mainland if that's possible, and we had a wonderful time there and look forward to returning.

Because I met some lovely people at il Vicoletto in Talomone, I visited them in Porto Ercole. We went out in their boat, and this coastline is spectacular, wild, isolated...I do hope that the Maremma is not flooded with tourists, but it is such a magical place.

We rented a car while traveling through Italy and decided to stop on this magical peninsula 'island' as it looks on the map. We were not disappointed the water is blue and warm. The people are extremely friendly! I would come back to this place every year if I could... to relax and enjoy true hospitality and beauty! We stayed at hotel Filippo II - Very friendly hotel with a great breakfast, bathrooms need revamping but has an amazing view!!

I went traveling on a scooter from Orbello to the Monte. It was in the rain, but once reaching the Convento at the top, you have very beautiful views and you can see the island's connection to the mainland it is quite stunning. There is nothing up int he Monte except this Convento but really worth the trip up if you're in the region.

We just returned from 12 days in Italy where we spent most of our time in Tuscany. If you drive up the coast from Rome, you run in to an area called Monte Argentario which is a small penninsula attached to the mainland by a causway. There are two main villages Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano. We visited Porto Santo Stefano. It is only 90 minutes from Rome and is the southern most point of Tuscany. It si a great break if you just landed in Rome and want to find a nice place to rest on the Med Sea to break up the drive to the ian areas of Tuscany like Montalcino, Siena, Florence, It is a small fishing village with beautfil shops and restaurants. Great selection of hotels and the color of the water is the most beautiful aqua blue you can imagine....crystal clear!Whiel we didn;t have trouble communicating....people that speak english were very limited. We ran in to one situation where a storekeeper had just mopped the floor and wanted us to walk around the wet area. She only spoke Italian and of course we walked all over the mopped area and it frustrated the shopkeeper. We finally realized what we sis and apoligized as pest we could in our limited Italian. There are not many tourists that are not Italian...which to us was great.. We really like getting in touch with the local vibe when we travel and Porto Santo Stefano delivered. I posted some reviews of the hotel where we stayed and some restaurants we visited. If you are going to the area, chack out the following..Hotel Albergo II - Awesome location and really reasonable price,La Busola - Fresh caught fish daily...super pastas troo!La Regina Di Napoli: The most amazing pizza we have ever had...serioulsly.

Great views but unfortunatley no beaches to reach. 4 km are off-road and not recommended for non-SUV's !

M.A. is an island connected to the mainland by 2 strips of land and a man-made causeway. It is mainly mountainous, so the coast is steep and rocky. There are however some nice little coves and a couple of nice harbour towns. It is a nice place to drive around or cycle around, and it is about 40km in circumference. You cannot drive all the way around because a small prtion of the road is suitable for cars.We drove to the highest point of the island and enjoyed fabulous views.

We did two hikes from the port, first to the tower and the second one, a circle around the ort from the ridges. Trails were easy to follow, once you found them. Good idea to get a good topographic map of the area, 1:25000

Monte Argentario is Tuscany on the Mediterranean, I have been coming to this exclusive part of the world for many years and it keeps on getting better. The recent opening of an 18 hole golf course and spa coupled with the great sailing makes it the ideal holiday destination. I thoroughly recommend renting a small speed boat for the day to explore the shoreline which features many caves and lovely hidden bays. If you like diving there are many diving centers and instructors. The food... where to begin, every day fresh fish can be found along the seafront markets of Porto Santo Stefano and if you want to dine out there are over 30 restaurants which cater for all needs and pockets.

Hello,Just wanted to let you know what a wonderful time my husband George and I had during our stay at Monte Argentario. We rented an absolutely lovely apartment with large panoramic terrace and private beach access right on the coast .We spent a beautiful week sunbathing, resting and touring the fascinating area.I really recommend a stay at Monte Argentario, not many tourists know this part of Tuscany, but it is truly spectacular and the food and wine are delicious.
