La Scala, the best opera house in the world I've heard. Well, the outside is not eye catchy but I never went in, so cannot say much.

I get it, the real estate is expensive there but for what we ordered, it was super expensive and food was very mediocre. The service was good though. We went there before our opera at Teatro alla Scala, so it was at least convenient.

We walked along towards the Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square), Milan starting about 9pm. There was an open air concert I was told. I recalled the evenings before Christmas in that Square and trumpeters and trombones playing carols from the windows of a former palace on the far side of the square. The crowd joined in - in several languages. As we approached the area I heard the beat. It was a rock concert but no dancing as it turned out. Too crowded. And the more than half moon glittered up above. That's how cold it was - dry, biting cold. All sorts of police ( the financial police, too in riot gear) guarded the separate entrances and exits from the Square. The Gallerie crowded. No food or drinks allowed in. Yet in the Gallery 5 police officers posed for a photo with the person plus beer bottle they were escorting! We exited round the back of the Duomo to streets filled with performances, hot dog vendors etc and firecrackers. I bought a can of coke and 5euros of hot chestnuts at one stall. Chestnuts delicious but coke can taken from ice. Vin brule (mulled wine) from another stall warmed me. Re-entering the square a police officer asked to search my handbag or 'see into it'. No alcohol. I produced the can which was snatched from me and passed round the 5 officers to a last who stored it I think. Much apologies. The square boomed with the concert and people -peaceful people with young children. But the cold was creeping into us. We headed out past the police in riot gear with guns to O'Connell's bar and warmth. Yet even at 10 to midnight people were hurrying alone the narrow streets towards the Duomo. Capo d'Anno - Head of the Year to all. Auguri.

It's like the first shopping mall built 100's of years ago . I loved it. A wonderful way to spend a misty day

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and Teatro alla Scala are symbols of Milan. They are hard to miss if you go for a walk in the center. Just relax in front of the La Scala and then have a walk towards Duomo cathedral. You will appreciate it a lot.

The gallery offers pieces of art for any picky traveller! The building itself is a piece of art, just walking around and looking at the ceilings and interior details will put you in a state of trance. The amount of canvases and sculptures is huge, so get ready to spend there at least 4 hours! Left an unforgettable impression.

especially if you are keen on italian art of 1800 and on . few exceptional pieces, but certainly worth the effort

The piazza is alive with people and well planned around a huge sculpture. La Scala is more impressive on the inside and thus simply another side of the square from this perspective.

Once we toured the Opera House, we went to the Gallerie. This was a spectacular place to come. Great history of the Scala.

The interior is marvelous. It's very near to Duomo. Loads of statues to see and admire. The inside hall is very nice in red and gold. Entrance price is cheap €6 per person. Try to avoid seeing the gallery during rehearsals.

It was wonderful to visit such a famous place after hearing about it for many years. We enjoyed looking inside the concert hall from one of the boxes. From the outside, the building is quite plain, but the interior is more as I had imagined such a famous opera house would be.

Surprisingly this gallery is free and the collection is unexpectedly huge. It begins with contemporary art and then moves backwards and houses the works of most Italian artists. I love the works before 19th century. A must visit and seeing this you can be convinced Italy is the art centre if the world!!

This spot has a beautiful collection of contemporary art (19th and 20th century). Its recent refurbishment improved displays and exhibit halls. The area itself is a beautiful place to enjoy some coffee or a glass of wine.
