Really enjoyed getting away from the crowds and exploring Grotte di Catullo. A surprising amount of space and spectacular views and impressive roman buildings. Exhibitions also had English signs and descriptions.

This is the biggest roman Villa in northern Italy, in one of the most wonderful places on earth, Penisola di Sirmione on Lago di Garda.Closed on Sunday Jan. 25, a wonderful, sunny and windy winter day. Mother nature loves Italians more than they do.

The Romans certainly knew a great spot when they saw one! These very impressive ruins are really worth a visit. The position at the end of this beautiful town is so panaramic, views to die for.We spent a couple of hours just wandering and looking at the wonderful view.A short wallk from town , or hop the little train .

As a history lover for me impressive.. It is well kept and beautiful.. If you are around Sirmione, worth to visit..

This archaeological site is huge, right on the tip of Sirmione. We spent about 1.5hrs here just wandering around reading all the information about each spot. We also went into the museums to look at the artifacts. Great views from here too. Can walk easily from town.

The scale of the ruins which are still available to walk though is beautitfully unbelievable in the construction .

This is an intriguing ruins from the 1st century b.c. Possibly constructed for a Roman poet, Catullo, the layout and grounds gives one an excellent image of the private home of Roman aristocracy. The museum is average, so spend your time exploring the grounds.

If you are in Sirmione and love "old stones", you should definitely visit the Grotte di Catullo. The place is incredibily huge, and the view is really nice. There is also a little museum at the beginning.

Picturesque, relaxing and very interesting. There is even a little train ride from the town if you don't fancy the walk.

We visited Sirmione on a very busy Sunday while staying at Pescheria del Garda and found that on this particular day, entry was free - however, we would have definitely paid to visit this amazing site on the headland of the town. The sheer scale of the ruins and villa are quite staggering and it is wonderful to be able to wander through the area and try and imagine what life would have been like so many years ago. The view across the lake are beautiful too. While we walked along the side of the lake and up over the hill to the Grotte di Cattullo and then back down into the busy town, there were little trains going backwards and forwards that take visitors to the site.A must do when in Sirmione.

Only disappointment was that I had not left myself as much time as I should have to visit this amazing site....it was so much larger than I had expected! Set in the most beautiful spot at the tip of the Sirmione peninsula with stunning views of the lake, I could have spent many more hours exploring the ruins and museum.

Astonishing in size and in such condition that one can well imagine the guests of this magnificent villa looking out of their windows at the idyllic lake. A must see in the area.

Worth the walk but be aware that you can't get in on Mondays!!! It seemed to be interesting and you get some marvellous views from the Grotte.

From the information I had read previously, I did not expect too much from this visit but it is good to be pleasantly surprised. The "Catullus" ruins may not have been lived in by the poet but what remains of this villa has been well-kept and well presented. We enjoyed this visit much more than any of the Roman ruins we had just visited in Rome! Of course, partly that was due to the spectacular setting on the end of the Sirmione peninsula. However, it was also due to the excellently presented information available in English in the well-designed museum. After the museum, we wandered through this amazing villa and marvelled at its size.

Great value for money. Extensive Roman ruins amongst olive groves. Museum very good with English translations on everything. Perfect views over the lakes. Lots of walking up hills and stairs. On the way to the site try the beach pathway which is a lovely walk on the east side and has a small hot spring as well on the way.
