We explored this castle at the top of an s-shaped road when it was technically closed. However, there were other tourists, so we didn't feel guilty being there. Normally there is an entrance fee & a tour that you have to be part of, but in March, it was free. The Castle was begun in the 12th century & expanded until the 17th century. After we fell in love with the place, we found a book that described the castle in great detail at the Wertheim Museum. It would have helped to have the book as we toured, but the many pictures we took helped us remember. There is a restaurant that is open only in the warmer months when tourists are plentiful. But you have to be very hardy to climb the hill to reach this castle. Amazingly, all the windows of this massive site were fitted with glass (made with lead) & most of the rooms were heated. Fireplaces were found on each of the three stories of the castle. There is a spectacular view of the town and river from the top of the donjon, but you probably aren't allowed up there on the tour. Because we could roam wherever we wanted, this site was our most favorite. Hope you can do the same!

A beautiful town with many atractions. As i was in a bussines trip i had some time off to spend , so i've had some shopping @Chic Outlett - Wertheim Village afterwards took the narrow path trough pedestrian streets trying to get to the castle. I have been amazed of what i saw there. Old castle since 12th century having a canion inside it's stone walls surrounded by awesome views of Wertheim. It was a pleasure for my eyes. Don't lose the chance to visit it.

High on the hill overlooking the town of Wertheim and the Main river stand the castle,The easiest way to get there is on the Tractor train called Gekobahn from outside the Swan Hotel it costs e4 it could be said that it has seen better days but that is due to the goings on during the so called 30 years warThe castle was saved from further damage during the later days of the second world war when two men Heinrich Herz and Anton Drinkel climbed to the top of the tower to fly a white flag to save the town from the advancing American troops.once you have got into the castle you have two choices turn left a put a euro the into the gate and explore the castle ruins or go right and go to the cafe for a drink they both have great views.

I was able to stop off at this castle on a business trip to a nearby town. Although it was winter and the castle was closed for entry, going to the grounds and walking around the outside was nearly as fun and impressive as I can imagine going inside would be.

I really loved this place most.Left on the exterior to retains its architectural intent.For while in the interior a beautiful restaurant and bar in being manged. The waiters here were very friendly and welcoming.We had a table reserved for 5 people. I think this the place with the best meat stakes and roasts Werthiem. The meal was prepared fast and evry enjoyed his or Her order. This is a must Visit for all travelers.

Entry is a measley one euro and whilst not presented as well as some you do get to roam around most of the ruins and ascend the keep tower. Views on a clear day, whilst not extensive certainly give a clue as to why it was built here. Entry to the restaurant is free so why not treat yourself to a meal 'am schloß' whilst you're up there. You have a choice of a stiff walk up or during thee day a regular tourist train will take you up for just a small donation!

It sure was hard work to get up here but we got some lovely views and its always worth the effort to make the climb. The castle itself is partly ruined but do t be put off as its well worth a visit.

Wertheim is a great little Bavarian town of narrow streets and half timber houses. Purchased on the hill above the town is Castel Wertheim, built in the 12th century and destroyed in the 30 year war in 1634. The climb from the streets of the town is steep and not for those not physically fit. If you do climb, you are rewarded with a beautiful overlook of the Main river right before it joins the Rhine in Koblenz. Sit in a sidwalk cafe and have a expresso and a pastry and admire the half timber houses. Also is the Wertheim leaning watch tower. Pisa in Italy is not the only leaning tower....

For just 1 euro per person you can see all places of the Burg. Many stairs to climb also to the highest tower. A nice and and not expensive beer afterwards in the bar was the crown on the visit. Small tip: from town dont take the first way up (next to church), but walk 100 meters further and you will see an other sign "Zum Burg" this is a nice adventurous stairway.

I saw it first time in Jan 2013. Wrong time to be there since its winter and closed. However, liked the trek and the view from the top. Again visiting next week so hoping its open this time.

We visited Wertheim Castle in July 2013 which is spread over a large outcrop and offers excellent views over the town and rivers Main and Tauber. Good value for money.

This is one of the best. A 12th century castle that is pretty much still intact. The existing walls and towers give you an excellent perspective of what this mammoth looked like years ago. Can be some strenuous climbing to cover the whole thing, but it well worth it. From the higher points of the wall you can get a great overview of the whole castle. Be sure to climb the keep (main tower) for some excellent views.

Took the free shuttle from Wertheim Village (which is a luxury shopping village also worth a visit!) to the actual town of Wertheim which is by the lake. Beautiful long walks around it, if one has the time.To get to the castle one can take the tiny village trains ... costs €4 each for both ways. If we weren't in a hurry, I would've rather walked through the old town and up to the castle. it's not far. it's uphill though.The castle itself is in ruins but quite something! Beautiful view of the lake & the quaint old charming town. Half timber houses ..Saturday evening was very quiet as shops seemed to be closing by 5pm or so.

A walk up the steepish path is worth it. From the castle there are good local panoramic views of the old and new parts of Wertheim. The castle is perched on a rocky hill and in places the red sandstone blocks can be seen laid onto the rock. The castle is partially in ruins, left that way for many years since it was vacated. This castle offers something different from others in Germany as it is partially in ruins from centuries ago (the city was not bombed in WWII). There is an example of a medievil toilet on one of the outer walls that makes us appreciate what we have now!
