This city is amazing. I was reading a bit about it on the drive there and saw that it is built on the edge of a meteor crater. The 15 million year old crater is one of the best preserved on Earth and was used by USA astronauts to train for walking on the moon. I thought I had found the wrong information but checked again and found it was true. The walled city is on the Romantic Road and is a fine representative of all that is best along the road. Nordlingen is well over 1100 years old. The houses are picture perfect with narrow streets between them opening to wide squares. We went for the Christmas Market and enjoyed exploring the town. Although it was an hour long drive to get to Nordlingen from my sister's house it was well worth the drive.

You can walk on the rooms, inside the walls and outside them. While you're moving on the walkways you can imagine you were a soldier defending the city.Lots of places cahrge for entry to their walls, but these are free, so don't miss them.

You can walk almost 360 degrees of the town wall, its a great way to spend a couple of hours and even if its raining, the mostly covered walkway will let you see bits of the town you would otherwise miss.

We arrived at Nordligen early evening and had a quick look round. It is not hard to see why this town is on the romantic road, I could have taken a thousand pictures of all the pretty houses and buildings. Was not a lot open early evening and not many people about.Returned in the morning thinking there might be a bit more life about but but it was still very quiet. I am sure that the history of the town is very interesting and would have liked the chance to find our, but there is hardly ant English explanations so felt a little deflated not being able to find out about the town.Pointless us going into the museum as yet again no English.Thought the ornamental pigs around the place most entertaining, but would of liked an explanation as to their significance.

Being able to completely circle a walled city on a morning walk is and experience you dont get very often, seeing the old architecture, pretty Bavarian flowerboxes hanging from the windows, it is really picturesque. Peeking out through the old archers viewpoints gives you an idea of defensive life back 1000 years. Well maintained given its age and free.

There are not many places where the city wall is intact and where you can walk it. This is one of the better ones, although most of the views out are either blocked by trees or other construction. Still, the wall gives you a feel for what it was like in 1600. Several of the towers may ve visited for a fee.

Recomendo a visita.
