Karpathos is not know by its ancients sites, although by know. The paleokastro is a small church with some mosaics and columns in the back yard. It is a minor site, but if you have time it worths the visit. There road signs in the city of Arkasa and it is very easy to reach the site.

I definitely like the way Greeks treat their ancient heritage. The most valuable are kept behind fences and with admission fees to keep on excavating and researching while the less important ones are usually for free. Which is remarkable compared to middle Europe, where you have to pay a fee almost even when you just want to make a picture of the sightseeing ;-) Anyway this part of Arkassa feels like from some other world. You have here wild rocky shores, ancient settlement on top of a flat hill, which is almost impossible to see from beneath and this small chapel with mosaics on its courtyard. Take some time and have a look at the chapel and mosaics and then climb up the hill. It is definitely not that hard as it looks like when you get off your car, it should not take more than 15 minutes to get atop and most of the way you would probably survive only with flip-flops, but some better shoes might come handy that’s for sure. Atop you’ll find remnants of an ancient settlement. There are ruined stoned walls, some columns scattered around, ruins of a house and magnificent views over Arkassa bay area and the city as well as over the sea. Worth of visit in late afternoon before sun set as the city will be glowing by sun rays. That’s the place you can feel the history passing by (as well as on Vroukounda on the North) If you would like to get some more info about those places, feel free to ask me.
