This was just amazing, and so worth the drive from Chania out to the middle of nowhere. The photos can't do it justice. Driving on the gravel road was totally fine in a tiny rental car - the only issue was other tourists who were not confident in their driving causing a huge slow-down; so it took longer than it should have to get to/from the dirt parking lot. Beautiful views and roaming goats along the way were fun scenery leading up to the walk to the beach. Bring sneakers for that part! It's 1-2 km, and I did it sandals but wished for something sturdier. The views on the way down are everything you could hope for and more. Getting to the beach we easily found nicely positioned umbrellas, which was a must to rent for spending the day there - otherwise there's not a speck of shade. I went on a weekday and got there hours before the cruise ships arrived, and was pleasantly surprised by the low number of people around (considering the size and splendor of the location). Spent the day sun bathing and swimming in the water (which was an amazing temperature), enjoying the soft sand and gentle waves. For the couple hours the cruises arrived and dumped a bunch of people on the beach I retreated to the sunbed and and just read and ate a packed lunch until the boats lefts again and the beach went back to being low-key. The only downside is that the beach of course isn't pristine with so many visitors - there were tons of cigarettes littering the sand near umbrellas and a bit of garbage; there needs to be better clean-up and care taken by those that visit. At the end of the day getting back to the parking lot found a lot of goats roaming about it - one was even napping in an uncovered Jeep! On the way back along the dirt road there were a few vendors with little tables set up selling various food souvenirs... on a whim I stopped and tried the honey, and was pleasantly surprised at the amazing flavor. Seriously one of the best and most uniquely flavored honeys I've had - I only regret I didn't get more; it was a nice little reminder of the day.

Pls don't go there via land if you can't walk long distance. Maybe try take the boats. The uphill and downhill roads are very difficult to walk. It is about 1 km but feels like 10 km. the view and experience are really worth it thou.

Wonderful beach with its pink sandy beaches and warm waters. We had parked at the top and walked down which is a really long way because you have the return journey when everyone is very tired and its all up hill! You can buy food and drinks. Its best to get there early cause its very popular. They do boat trips from the next town which saves the long walk.

Was there on a saturday, not the best day, too much of people on beach and in the water. Weekends are not so god to be there. Otherwise the bath was good, you have to walk a bit to began swimming. A bit overrated I think.

Spent a day at Knossos and it was interesting, but the actual tour does not allow a visitor to leave the surface which is disappointing, especially when the real mysteries lie beneath.

I know., house here, only for you two and no one else.. Same story here, must say that.. Going back to reality there's better necessary to have much better access, good organization, very basic but fully functional facilities, cleanliness as no.1 priority and., what's very important - "decently" charged entrance tickets to support all of that. All those thing should happen asap, that's my opinion. AND extremely controlled, charged camping site nearby should be considered, people would sell their soul to stay here over night.Greece is one of several richest countries in the world, the only ones who do not care about are Greeks themselves. This is a diamond, one of so many Greek wonders, a dream place that should simply and properly work for the Greek interests at it's best.

Heaven's Gate.Designed to look at the spectacle, it was a very good decision. I really liked the way there. Parking was easy for some money. After walking good bathing. The scenery is beautiful. The photos speaking. This is the gate of heaven

Arriving there by car is not white-knuckle ride, however I would recommend to drive with caution. From the parking spot, it takes about 10 minutes to reach the strategic point overlooking the bay. Amazing location for taking breath taking picture. From there, other 10 minutes walking to reach the beach. The way back may be fatiguing if you are out of shape.

I visited a lot of beaches in my life, in many countries. But this one is definitely the BEST I have ever seen. Despite the effort you have to face leaving the beach and climbing a lot of stairs up to the top of the hill, where you have to leave your car, the visit worth every single second spent there.
