Ancient Asini is a prehistoric settlement located on the side of Mt. Barbouna. If you’re reading about it you think that there’re much more to see than in the reality.Hopefully it will change soon, since there is a team working on the place, to make the ruins more accessible and preserving all the remains. I got a promise, next year in the same time (in September) they’ll be ready (?).When you enter into the archaeological site, on the foot of the hill, there is the remains of a Roman bath, indicating the time when the Romans occupied this place.Climbing up on the stairs to the acropolis, you’re passing some ruined walls, memory of this Hellenistic fortification, and some wells, or cisterns.Actually you can see the fortification walls much better if you stay on the road leading to the sea. Obviously they were restored maybe recently, maybe by the Italians, who used the harbor during the Second World War.

Nowadays Homer's Asine is a hillock by the sea, where among the rocks and grass you can see stretches of old wall, etc from various periods - Mycenaen, mediaeval, even WW2 (there's an Italian machine gun nest). No tourists, no guides, only a little information to help you explore for yourself. Besides archaeologists, Asine will be of interest to two types of visitor: families with children, who can play on the beach, and lovers of the great Greek Nobel-Prize-winning poet Giorgos Seferis, who wrote a wonderful poem about "The King of Asini". To find it, head straight for the sea, past a lot of campsites. As you get near the shore you'll see a hummock on the left. That's Asine.
