The small museum is located in an older bulding close to the Römerturm (Roman Tower), which protected the Northwestern corner of the Roman castle Favianis.It went on protecting the town of Mautern which goes back to the Carolingian period (second half of 8th century). The town was erected on the site of the Roman castle and incorporated some of its fortifications. The museum hosts neolitic and bronze age finds in addition to those from the Roman period which extends from late first century to about 475 AC when the Roman inhabitants withdrew to Italy during the reign of Odovacar. The museum is well kept and worth visiting. Unfortunately the excellent museum guide is only available in German.
