A must visit. It is a long way but well worth the time you spend in the car. Going up Troodos mountains you can stop at so many places, wine tasting, a little villages. At the top when we went was deep snow and you could ski if you wanted to. Odd one minute on the beach in Paphos and the next skiing!! The monastery is out of this world and free of charge to look around what is just an amazing sight. Will not go into any more detail as I will spoil it for your own visit

This is a fairly modern building in the Troodos Mountains. Spectacular scenery and a very windy road to get there. The monastery itself is quite small and covered everywhere in gold leaf. Avoid the tourist trap shops nearby unless you like tat and religious icons!

I went on a small mini-bus on an all inclusive trip. We stopped for breakfast and a traditional Cypriot lunch. I learnt lots about Cyprus and it's way of life. The monastery was beautiful but we were only allowed a short time there. An extra 30 minutes would have been ideal.

Lots of history and beautiful things to see. We had a brilliant tour guide who was very knowledgeable. Only disappointment was not seeing any monks.

Very Impressive, gold icons, gold chandeliers, beautiful pictures and full of treasures.Young monks were sat reading in alcoves and talking quietly. No cameras were allowed. Our guide was a local and was a mine of information. The shop was full of interesting items and not too expensive. We bought some wine made at the monastery, which was very acceptable.Do NOT go to the toilets unless you are absolutely desperate.Filthy dirty,no paper,no soap and no driers and at the top of a flight of stairs.

The premier religious site in the Troodos mountains, Kykkos Monastery rewards the visitor with an opulent display of the Orthodox church's art and treasures. The walls are extensively decorated with striking mosaics and frescos. The interior of the church is a riot of gold, brass and icons (no photography allowed). Most impressive is the museum, which is well worth the entrance fee and contains a rich collection of religious objects, vestments and treasures.

Kykkos Monastery was founded in 1100s AD, and was rebuilt many times. It lay on the height of 1140 meters, to the west in Troodos mountains. It is a male Monastery, one of the most important, known and rich on Cyprus, dedicated to Virgin Mary. It is open for visitors, but there is a dress code as it used to be, and one can not go in wearing shorts or linen. There is a Monastery museum on the grounds, where a most important icon of Virgin can be found. This Icon has powerful crafts and in not to look at, that´s why the picture itself was in 1795 covered by a silver riza and now is never uncovered. There is a lot of fine bright mosaics and frescoes in buildings all around the inner court with a well in the middle. Mosaics are recent work from 1990s and are a real nice example of decorations in a contemporary artstyle. Whole place is an important religious destination with a lot of pilgrims and worshipers .Nice area for promenade och maybe picnic nearby Monastery. Because of height it is always considerably colder here and often rainy, so it is good to have a warm sweater with you. There is also a lots of souvenir shops selling tourist-requested products nearby the entrance by the car-parking, as well as few restaurants.

Approx 80km from the resort of Limassol, a journey of spectacular beauty taking you to over 5500feet above sea level. The Kykkos monastery is a most beautiful and awesome place to visit. It nestles into the tree-lined mountainside shrouded in mists emitting a sense of spirituality and mystery. The museum was fascinating and a stroll amongst the outer building gave opportunities to view the wonderful murals and frescoes. We spent some considerable time viewing the relics and antiquities that are so well displayed and accessible. Kykkos monastery is well worth the winding drive and will leave you a little breathless! Not just the altitude!

A long drive from the coast to a similar altitude to Ben Nevis, This monastery site in the Troodos Mountains dates back to the 11th Century, but fire and earthquakes destroyed the orininal. So now you see a more recent building immactuately well kept. Monks still reside here and were friendly to tourists. Archbishop Makarios became a monk here in 1926 and took refuge here in 1974 when the military sought him. He wished to be buried here and his tomb is a few kilometres away and can be visited. The monastery is rich with icons and murals on nearly all of the internal walls and ceilings, Ths Virgin Mary icon is covered and anyone who peeps is said to be blinded. An interesting place.

Although I've given a date of December 2013, it's actually about five years since I was here, but on reflection the drive was well worth it. Interesting icons and other art inside the monastery. As it's a working church you aren't allowed to take photographs inside the building, but there are lots of murals outside worthy of a picture. In the town there is a parade of shops which as well as souvenirs also has foodstuff on offer.

Kykkos Monastery is in the Troodos mountains of Cyprus, near to the highest peak, Mount Olympus. The drive from the coast is long and winding and be prepared for it to get pretty cold up there. In October the coast temperature was in the mid 20s, In our foothills village (Lofou) it was around 20. Buy the time we got to the top of the mountain it was 5 degrees and the hailstorm we suffered stayed on the ground, not melting, like snow. The monastery is not spectacular from the outside and looks far too recently built. Apparently it has been there for centuries but the restoration doesn't give it much of an ancient look. But once inside the various rooms, museum, corridors, galleries, church and courtyards are beautiful and very photogenic. Men in shorts above the knee and women wearing revealing clothes have to don a monk-style habit which makes the experience more fun and there are some amazing photo opportunities, especially in the church. If you are having a relaxing holiday, want somewhere away from the heat and bustle of the coast then this is the place to head to. But a trip will take all day.

Don't expect a ruin to clamber and explore! This is a current monestry restored after earthquake damage twice over I believe! On entry purple robes are available as shirts and strappy tops are not permitted! Some fascinating holy relics inside but as the information was in Greek I shall research exactly what these proclaimed to be! A close stop is the tomb of Arch Bishop Makarios!Car parking with a cafe and shops nearby too!
