The Helles Memorial serves the dual function of Commonwealth battle memorial for the whole Gallipoli campaign and place of commemoration for many of those Commonwealth servicemen who died there and have no known grave. The United Kingdom and Indian forces named on the memorial died in operations throughout the peninsula, the Australians at Helles. There are also panels for those who died or were buried at sea in Gallipoli waters. The memorial bears more than 21,000 names. There are four other Memorials to the Missing at Gallipoli. The Lone Pine, Hill 60, and Chunuk Bair Memorials commemorate Australian and New Zealanders at Anzac. The Twelve Tree Copse Memorial commemorates the New Zealanders at Helles. Naval casualties of the United Kingdom lost or buried at sea are recorded on their respective Memorials at Portsmouth, Plymouth and Chatham, in the United Kingdom.

While touring Gallipoli area to see the sights of the war we have also stopped by and visited Hellas Memorial.Looking at the names of the soldiers died during the war takes you away to a very much different worldVery much exciting to be present here and remember all those difficult days they had fougted.

2nd visit to Gallipoli peninsular and the first to visit Cape Hellas. This visit to pay our respects to all the fallen. Its a somber, emotional experience and a great example of ignorance and arrogance from the Allied perspective - and a even better example of comprehensive national pride from the Turkish.

We were unable to visit this site during our tour but our ship later sailed passed the memorial which stands prominently on the headland

Gallipoli is often thought of as the battle of the ANZACs (the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) but British soliders also fought in the conflict and the Hellas Memorial is in memory of these soldiers. Its a simple memorial, a white pinnacle with a square wall surrounding it containing the names of the service men and women who died in this battle. We visited the site to find the name of our great grandfather William McCully. There was also a small museum not far away (a short drive) which allowed you to get a sense of what this battle was like and where it was fought. We visited this on our tour around Western Turkey. If you want to see what else we did then you can read it at http://www.my-family-adventure-holiday-reviews.com/turkey/ or see my other trip advisor reviews.
