svartsengi geothermal power plant

The Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant is generally not open to the public. You can't pull up to the plant and take a tour. But you can contact the power company and ask very nicely to take a guided tour of the plant... which is what we did on our honey moon (I have a wonderful, understanding wife).As an industrial engineer, this was a real treat. The plant is like nothing I've seen, probably one of the most advanced geothermal plants in the world. Seeing the history of the plant by touring the very first turbine they used to make power until the most recent addition of a turbine that was a collaboration between Icelandic and German engineers was amazing.The really awesome part was our guide, Vidir, explained the culture of Iceland through it's engineering. Everything in and out of the plant is connected in the companies eyes. They want to reduce "waste" which is anything not being used... everything from the extra geothermal water to the steam released is used to make something else. He, and the power company, feels it's their responsibility to use everything they have, not because it's a waste of money, but because it's their duty as Icelandic Global Citizens.If you have a love for engineering or power systems, a tour of this plant is a real treat... just remember to ask nicely (and maybe bring a thank you gift for the guide from your country) since its not a public attraction.
