We visited this splendid little bird museum last weekend - and it was a great experience. This small little house that you can hardly see, with its pleasent surroundings, cuddles on the banks of Mývatn :) When inside it seems to expand and the architecture is perfect for this kind of museum. Don't miss this !

I'm not that into birds but my daughter is, so we went around each display case checking out each bird. The exhibit is well put together, listing the name in multiple languages and where it lives both summer and winter.

Just dropped into this place in search of coffee while checking out the birds on the lake. What a find. Saw plenty of new birds on the short drive and walk into the buildings. The coffee was the best we had in Iceland! We sat with our Lattes and watched a Slavionian grebe turning eggs in her nest. They even let us use their scope! Then had to have more coffee. Ashamed to say we didn't actually get to the museum. Do visit, you won't regret it.

This started out as one of my wife’s wild-goose chases. (Pun intended)Really well done little museum. Well done contemporary architectural design, inside and out.

We stumbled across this museum which is essentially a collection of stuffed birds displayed beautifully. It was set up in memory of the man who spent his life from a young age collecting eggs and birds who died tragically on the lake, leaving his fascinating collection behind. A very informative yet calming and peaceful place.

I visited Fuglasafn Sigurgeirs as an afterthought after a trip to the Myvatn Nature Baths. I was pleasantly surprised by the museum! It's absolutely beautiful inside and out. I really enjoyed seeing all of the birds and eggs -- many of which are native to Iceland. The museum has specimens of almost all bird species that inhabit iceland. Very impressive. The specimens are accompanied by informational signs that have buttons which activate a light near the actual specimen so you can tell which is which, while allowing the museum to display the birds artfully. Personally, I am not a birdwatcher, but if you are, then the museum has birdwatching hides, and telescopes to watch birds around the lake. I had a cup of coffee from the café in the bird museum, which was very nice. You can get food there as well, which looked good but we did not have time to stop and eat. There is also an attached boathouse museum which shows how people have lived and survived around Lake Myvatn. I would recommend having more than an hour for this museum to look at all the birds, the boat house, and also to have a bite to eat. We only had an hour because we got there at 3, but they closed at 4.

I'm not sure whether it has an extension part into the wild to see the different kinds of birds but we were guided to the main building where the specimen were. I had fun looking at the different kinds of owls and got to see puffin (although not alive) up close.

Stopped by here one recent wet afternoon for a sandwich and visit. It is really about one mans hobby which morphed into a museum and is really worth a trip. Everything is well laid out an easy to follow. The building itself is also very well integrated into the landscape and there are telescopes to see the birds on the lake.

A lovely museum in a beautiful setting. Bring your own binoculars on a good day and give yourself time to sit down outside with a coffee and watch the birds.

We weren't planning to go to the museum, but were looking for coffee when we saw the sign. We got very good cappuccino and drank it outside while looking at the birds on the lake. The museum is very educational if you want to know the names of the birds in iceland. In each window there are a number of stuffed birds, and there are buttons labeled with the bird names in a number of languages. When you press a button a little light comes on by the appropriate bird. In addition, at reception there are lists of the bird names translated into many languages (including Hebrew).

As an avid bird watcher, Sigurgeirs Bird Museum was a total delight. I was finally able to identify some of the birds we had been seeing around Iceland. It is a well designed museum and the gentleman there was very helpful. There is a charge but well worth the money. The museum is a short distance from the main area of Lake Myvatn and is located in an area where lots of birds can be seen, if you can withstand the midges!

Our group had a private tour of the museum. It had every bird from the area well labeled. There is also the eggs of most of the birds. The museum itself is beautiful, looking out over a lake with a moveable camera showing live birds on the lake on a TV.

Ability to see what birds inhabited Myvatn area - but you need to be a bird lover as no other attractions at the museum !

We visited this museum this May. My husband is a huge bird lover....he can spot a bird anywhere. I sometimes I think they are imprinted on his brain. He was totally fascinated with this museum and could have spent the whole day there. From the different eggs to every bird in Iceland displayed in their habitats, the museum flowed. I wish the building had been bigger as the birds tended to be crowded together somewhat, although small birds were displayed with like birds as was large birds. Also, there were babies displayed with several of their parents. We also loved the architecture of the building with the water flowing under glass in a stream with fish swimming in it from the lobby into the displays. Situated on the shore of Lake Myvatn made for a lovely setting for this fascinating museum.
