Very weird and atmospheric place with lots of bubbling mud pots. The area was very cold last week - minus 9 Celsius so wrap up warm.

My husband and I are huge volcano enthusiasts, so this area close to Lake Myvatn was a delight filled with a plethora of unusual volcanic attractions. My recommendation is you might want to spend at least 2 days in this area as there is so much to see and do. We started our visit with the Krafla Lava fields and completed the 1-2 hour circular walk before heading out. There were more walks lasting in duration from 4 hours to a day and given more time, we would have returned to embark on a half day walk, We travelled down the valley to the bubbling mud pools just off the main road and from there went to our accommodation in Lake Myvatn. We were constantly aware of the extremely volatile nature of this landscape and felt truly humbled by the powerful nature of the volcanoes.

Wonderful expanse of lava covered in snow really worth walking around and seeing the steam seep out.

Great place to walk around for an hour to explore the lava fields and the moss fiels around it. Close to other attractions in the area so worth a visit. Close to a very cool volcanic crater as well.

The Krafla/Leirhnjúkur lava fields are spectacular, wonderful, otherworldly, fantastic... I could go on and on, but nothing I can say will tell you of the raw beauty you must see for yourself. There are two main paths/loops from the small parking area, and together they take a few hours to walk. The walking is fairly easy.. some parts are flat and smooth, some parts are hopping between lava chunks.. but overall pretty easy. We started out toward the thermal area, with lighter colored earth, and a couple steaming and very pretty blue pools.. there are steps and boardwalks in this area. This is NOT all there is to see... please continue on the path, toward the visible crater in the distance, and things start to get really interesting. Here is old lava, in many interesting shapes and patterns, covered in brand new lava from the most recent volcanic event, which has left the earth warm and steaming. Grey meets black in all manner of shapes and sizes, from holes, to cracks, to pillows and curtains. Lava can form the weirdest and most beautiful formations and all are worth seeing. I particularly liked the oases of green plant life surrounding the small steaming holes.. the brilliant green in contrast to the start black is wonderful. We hiked to the highest point and from there you can look over the whole area.. it is so clear where the lava stopped... pretty amazing to see that point and realize that with all the devastation that lava flows can cause, they also stop at some point and freeze in place.Wear good hiking shoes (you could probably get away with sturdy tennis shoes, but no fashion shoes here), and bring layers... within the valleys of lava formations it is protected and can be mild, while out on the lava field the wind can blow and it will be chilly. Take your time to wander all the paths.. you will not be disappointed.

A raw tourist attraction, roped off so you can't venture beyond the sign posts. Amazing to see in it's full glory.

This is another lava field but it has large interestingly shaped lava formations. Certainly worse seeing .

Do it!!! Go!!! This is a once in a lifetime experience and I could die tomorrow with no regrets!! Words can't explain the power of the steam coming out of the geothermal springs. This is the hub of geothermal electricity and hot water for the town and beyond. The stunning volcano crater is filled with mineral rich water which causes the colour to be a vibrant blue.....such an amazing sight. Just go there and see for yourself :)

Easy parking, short hike up to view the crater nod lake. Very windy when we were there.. But no bugs!

I made the summit of Krafla and the views from the top of the volcano on a sunny day are just breath taking. truly recommend it.

To be fair when we arrived here it was raining which from the start hindered our experience. We'd already been to Geysir at this point which we thought was very good and Krafla was just more of the same. If you've staying at Myvatn for quite a few days then is worth a visit.
