We didn't go into the fort itself but walked round it. It is a really impressive building. The walk up to it was stunning. It is a but of a muscle burning walk but so worth it for the panoramic views. One one side is the sea and the other the town of Senj and mountains. Absolutely stunning!

If you are in the area it's worthwhile to stop here. You can see why this castle was built in its strategic location overlooking the Vinodolski straight with the islands of Krk and Rab both in the line of fire. Haven't gone inside but the park and the surroundings of the castle are worth a stop on their own

Came across this castle while driving through Senj. A nice collection of artefacts on each floor as you make your way to the top of the castle. The views from the top are fantastic.

We enjoyed visiting Nehaj Fortress, situated near Senj with commanding and very beautiful views up and down the coast. The interior is interesting, with some good displays of the costume and weaponry of the people who built the fort and manned it in the 16th century, and some other items used by them too. A lot of the history of the place is told with some pretty handy displays. There's a cafe in there too. A quite fascinating and unusual feature is that each 'gun-port' or window on the ground floor incorporates three fields of fire, offering great defensive capability, enabling three shooters to man each window covering the exterior quite well. Well worth a visit, and don't forget to look at the ancient toilet on the battlements!

The fortress is now used for tourist purposes, and its top serves as an excellent vantage point from which to enjoy a beautiful view of the Croatian coast and islands of Rab, Goli, Prvić, Cres, Krk and the mountains Učku and Velebit. Also, Negligence is the symbol of the town and in a stylized form located on the city's coat of arms. The fort was built on the hill Negligence 1558th year, under the supervision of the captain and general of the Croatian Military Frontier John Lenković and Captain Herbert VIII. Auersperg Turjaškog. Working djelotovorinije defense Lenković given until the end destroy all the churches, monasteries and buildings outside the walls of Senja that in them might not pitched enemies. So to build Nehaj demolished church and monastery of St.. Peter and the Templar monastery of St.. George with istomenom church, whose foundations were later discovered in the ground negligence. This is confirmed by the written documents and parts of architecture, inscriptions and other antiquities built into the walls of the fort today. Nehajska fortress is rectangular in shape and is oriented to the cardinal points. The high is 18, and 23 meters wide. The exterior walls are built of hewn stone blocks, and thick as 2 to 3.3 meters. Towards the tip, and ending embattled in which five small angular towers. The walls are about hundred loophole and 11 large cannon holes. In addition, the fort has ground floor with garden and cistern. The ground floor has a fireplace and room for the crew and weapons. A crew of 100 soldiers was enough to deny the attackers and the besieged city Senju provided appropriate assistance.

Nehaj Castle and city Senj are so nice. They have long tradition. If you want to see Croatian history go to Senj and you can see that. I was there many times.

he name Nehaj comes from the Croatian term Ne hajati [ne xajati], which means Don't care. In the Croatian language this fortress has also other names, which are: Kula Nehaj [kula nexaj], what means Nehaj Tower, and Nehajgrad [nexajɡrad], what means Nehajtown.Beautiful view, nice park around the castle.I wanted to check the castle, as the name of it is similar to my name :D

If there is no raining, then I appreciate this trip to every Senj visitor. It is easy accessible by car, or on foot.It is also possible to park car under the castle and walk shorter, tha path is well maintained and lighted during evenings/nights.There is very nice view to the sae (and close island). There is a muzeum and restaurant (that I did not try).

Not a must but if you have time you can go there. There is really nice view, but whole castle is moreless tower and it is not interesting inside. There is some exposition and art gallery.

We stayed over in Senj overnight on our way from Pula to Plitvice with intention of visiting the Nehaj Fortress (I think fortress is a better description than castle). The fortress has been preserved really well and en route to visit there are infromation boards around providing information about different Uskoks which had made an influence during the times of Ottoman & Venetian threats. The exhibits within the fortress had information boards in different languages so we were able to pass round and have a good idea of what we were seeing. The boards also presented the history of the town and the fortress itself. Although this was very interesting I did feel that it was a little subjective in that it swayed in great favour of the Uskoks and gave them much praise perhaps instead of historical accuracy (not that I am disagreeing with the events but rather how they were written on the boards).Overall, we got an hour or so of looking around and them made our way to the roof of the fortress. We chose a wet and windy day so it was a little scary up there but the views were great. It also gave us an impression of what it would be like to be on guard duty up there and suffering the elements!

From the main road it was just a minute to drive there. It had great free parking facilities. Inside there is found a small restaurant serving great food. The personnel hardly had any english language knowledge but were helpful and service minded. Perfect for a lunch break when driving the Croation coastal road. The affordable (55 KN) mixed grill tasted great. There is also a museum if thats your cup of tea.

I visited this tower (not quite a castle, local people call it tower) on purpose, while on vacation nearby. We learn about it a lot in elementary school in Croatia, so it is a must visit if we care about history at all. It is well preserved, but the old core of the surrounding city is not taken care at all. There are decaying old buildings from the same era as the tower and this also could turn into turist attraction if someone recognized the value of it. Most other cities even younger than Senj and with no history have taken many steps to rebuild the facades and walls, but Senj is not considered a tourist city by its inhabitants and general population. Even the parking places are free :) Maybe this is the next undiscovered gem of the Croatian coast?
