This impressive building inside and out. With its impressive amber room. The palace should be on everyone's list when visiting St. Petersburg.

The Catherine Palace is an essential stop if you are visiting St Petersburg. There is only one time to go and that is EARLY to beat the crowds. We visited in February 2013 which is not peak season and were the first to enter with our private guide (very worthwhile if you are visiting Catherine Palace - we used Polina Volkova). We had the pleasure of being the first into many of the rooms so got some amazing photos. Eventually the crowd streams through and even in February you will find it crowded by mid-morning.The amber room is impressive, but it was the history shared by our guide that really made this an amazing visit. The palace was almost totally destroyed by the Germans in WW2 and there are some interesting photos from the time. For example, the Germans having taken Catherine Palace taking their own tourist shots, the palace after it was destroyed (no roof, walls blown apart, artwork looted or ruined), and even a photo of a bomb the size of a small truck meant to detonate after they left but which didn't go off.The destruction of Catherine Palace lead to a major restoration effort. At the time, there were limited people with the skills or experience to do the work. This resulted in the education and development of people in restoration work to the point St Petersburg is now renown for its skills in this field. The parklands are wonderful to stroll through, particularly in the beautiful snow. Allow plenty of time and this was a better place to visit that Peterhof if you are there in winter as Peterhof's fountains are all closed down.I've seen palaces throughout Europe (England, Spain, France, Italy) and nothing compares to Catherine Palace.

Really enjoyed the palace and park. The grounds were immaculate and gorgeous. Palace was in the original form. Tour guide followed me into the men's room. Would go again.

We went there intrigued by legend of the 'amber chamber'. Looks cool in the picutures in the Internet. However, when you see it 'live' it may be not so impressive. Considering time to get there may be not the best decision if you are short of days.

Opulence, opulence and yet more opulence! The Amber Room is rightly world famous and totally unique. A delightful place to visit and highly recommended.

This palace is grand. It was a delight to go through many rooms and finally see the Amber Room. It is a sad page of history that it had to be reconstructed, but I am glad to see what they have done.

a really nice place where you can see what power could achieve at that time, and all the world's best architecture at the time being applied in Catherine's palace. I advise to rent a car to go because it takes less time and is less costly. negative points: when i visited it was under reform and some rooms were not available to visit and the people inside do not speak English. Also since it was winter, the park was not as nice as in summer...

In the UK we think that Buckingham Palace is impressive, the Catherine Palace makes it look like a weekend cottage !!!!A lot of Russian people and general tourist visit so is a bit crowded , the rooms are vast , and you see more gold on the walls , ceilings etc , and when you consider that it was destroyed and rebuilt after the 2nd World War to as it was before it is amazing, lots of newly weds use the rooms , stair cases for wedding photo's trying to hide the plastic over shoes you have to wear to protect the floors , the main room is still used for concerts and is about 300 foot long by a 150 feet wide, and a ceiling height of about 70 feet , which is painted with angels and cherubs , I gather that Elton John used the room for a concert and the piano had to be airlifted and come via the roof , with the ceiling painting rolled back at a cost of £1 million pounds for a 100 people to hear the concert.
