liked the place - even in winter it was nice to walk through old wooden buildings drowning in snow. But when you get in (note - not all buildings are open in winter) you feel it alive, unlike many museums. Maybe that's because all buildings used to be a home for real people - you can read even their names in front - dont know. But this strong feeling of real life preserved inside the houses was the biggest impression. Pity, some of the buildings, especially the unusual octagonal chapel are in bad condition - looks like no care given.

Personally, I enjoy traditional wooden architecture but this exhibition surprises by the number of exhibits. There you can find old wooden churches, mills and the whole street of wooden houses ranging from very poor to very rich. Expierenced guides will tell you interesting stories about life in medieval Russia. You will be able to see geniune things and furniture used in those days. We visited the museum in autumn, so the colourful trees added beauty to this picturesque village.

A visit to this place makes you really wanna go back in time where you could be surrounded by serene artistic natural beauty instead of concrete jungles. Beautiful cottages from different parts of history adorn this estate, offering a glimpse into the life people led then.

This open air museum shows some izbas and the way paysan leaves in the older time. It is very interesting to see, and the walk in the museum is very enjoyable. Very interesting.

While on a group trip we stopped by the Museum of Wooden Architecture and I absolutely LOVED it! I enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the many wooden structures. I marveled at the beauty and simplicity of their architecture. There were a few ladies dressed up for the times the buildings were lived in and completed the picture of what life might have been like. I have shown my pictures of Russia and get more questions about these old wooden buildings.

I have known and loved this museum for years but my latest visit turned a huge disappointment: my son-in-law was refused to try his hand at shooting an arrow (there is this attraction provided by a local archery club or so they said) on discriminating grounds of him being a foreigner. However, he was accompanied by two professional interpreters (my daughter and myself) who could have translated all instructions, of which none were given. The pretext was that recently a foreign tourist got a trauma while shooting there. In this case they should have placed a notice " For Russian nationals only" or the like. We all were hurt and disappointed and pleasure of the visit was all spoiled. What a shame!

This is an open-air museum. It feels more like being in a country side here - very calm and quiet. It is close to the Ipatiev Monastery. So it would make sense to visit both places the same day. Basically it's a place where wooden houses from all over the Kostroma region were brought and put together. There are typical peasants' 'izba' and merchants' houses and churches from the XVIII-XIX cent. Russia is a country where wood was widely used for building, and the craft (and art) of working with wood was quite high. E.g. most churches present in this museum are built without using any nails. It is also interesting to see some of the houses from the inside. Even if you don't want to go and look inside the wooden houses - it is still a nice place to spend an hour or two or even three. One can sit on a bench and look at the reflection in the lake. Or walk around the birch forest... At the day of our visit there were not so many people, but I noticed different attractions for kids and their parents (e.g. archery area). There is also an place for children where Russian fairytales creatures live. Young mums with baby prams seem to like this place too. Because it is so serene here! I also saw photos of various winter activities - it must be very busy then. Would highly recommend going here.

This outdoor museum has either relocated or restored many houses and church from around Russia. There is a small stream and a path that leads to various houses built in various styles and depending on the status of the owner with different levels of comfort and space. Almost all of the buildings are made of wood. Like the normal houses in Kostroma the art on the windows of the houses is very special.
