We visited this house and museum with a private guide which helped the visit a lot. Mr. Dumont is a prolific and eccentric inventor who mostly kept his inventions private and not patented. Of surprise to us, being from the US, was that he seems to have invented the airplane under all of the stated rules before the Wright Brothers. Interesting and surprising to learn about. The attraction is not expensive (about US$3.50 per person), and there are many steps some of which are narrow and/or have tricky footing. This is a place we would not have gone without the suggestion by our guide, but it was worth an hour to see. There are bathrooms, a short film (in Portuguese), and a small gift shop at the top of the site.If this review is helpful then please indicate so below.

This is a special and unique house. It was the place where Santos Dumont, the plane inventor, used to spend the Summer time in Rio de Janeiro. Here we see the stairway in the entrance wich you can only start going up using your right foot, in order to achieve the end of it with the same right foot. You'll see some of his inventions, such as the wrist clock, the shower system and many other, as the 14 BIS project, the first airplane to fly registered by the news worldwide.

Like many people from outside Brazil, I didn't know much about Santos Dumont before arriving and learning from our tour guide. We stopped in at the house to see the genius of his architecture and design, Dumont's clever use of space and multi-purpose rooms were way ahead of his time. The house and museum are well worth a stop, the video is informative and some of the displays (namely the timeline of his flying machine models) are well done. There is definitely scope for improvement from a curatorial perspective- a larger museum section out of the house with more models of inventions, information on Dumont's life and options for translations on signage would make this experience a 5/5.Well worth a stop at the Enchanted house!

This is a quite amazing place. Mr. Santos Dumont had it built to his exacting specifications. Since he was a man of small stature, he got away with some nifty ideas. Check it out, you will love it.

This was a bit of a spur-of-the-moment stop for my husband and I when we were seeing the sights of Petropolis. Our guide Vicente (see Tour Guide Vicente - Rio Private Tours). It is the home of Santos Dumont, the father of Brazilian aviation. To be honest, until Vicente mentioned him while we were in the Imperial Summer Palace gift shop, I had never heard of him. His house was small, but cleverly designed. There was a small museum/gift shop when we exited that had a great video with subtitles in English (I think there are different subtitles for different languages, but one is English). That was great to give us a little more detail about him. It's a cute little house and an inexpensive (R$5 if I remember correctly) way to pass a little time while in Petropolis.

It's very nice to go. Not a very long visit. Has a good documentation and inventions by Santos Dumont. The house has stairs, so it's no good for people with disability.

I enjoyed the place so much because I know the story of his life, if I didn't know it, I would feel a little lost due to the little pieces of information we can find there. The house is in a very good condition and so are the objects which remain there. I recommend the place

Perhaps Santos Dumont is the most important brazilian for the world wide history, so an inventor like him deserve a better museum. The house is so small, but this isn't problem because Santos Dumont always said "Use only what you realy need". The problem is the museum doesn't allow to learn more about Santos Dumont's life, it's poor of information.

Small and cosy house. Just enough to live in a humble and happy way. The stairs make you start climbing with the right foot- always!. It was intriguing to know how much he learned and observed from the sky in a tiny observatory he built on the top of the roof. The Brazilian flag was at its top. This bedroom had a very simple closet and a working desk which turned into his bed at night by placing a mattress over it. Interesting...he was a very smart and lonely person. I did not know he had committed suicide. Thanks to him and his knowledge on aviation, which he learned all by himself and friends from France, we have his name as the first man to fly an airplane. And yes, he was a Brazilian!!!!!

We can have a hint of the genius the man who invented motorized airplanes was. However, we can also realize that he was a lonely person, as we can see how small rooms are. Not to miss

Really fascinating house. Definitely get a tour guide - one of the employees took us around for an hour for free - if you can as they add a LOT of really great additional information about the design of the house.

Is tidy, little and the visit is fast, but have a big value historic. With some inventions, done by himself Santos Dumont, inside the house like the stairs and the bathtub with hot water. Have too an enviroment with documentaries and equipaments interactive about the knowledge of Santos Dumont.

The house is very small, but surely was enough to make Mr Dumont's mind travel a lot! Helpful staff and very well preserved.

Very small house on three floors where the aviator lived. I would not go a long way out of the way to see this but if in town it is worth a visit

Worth the visit. Take a walking tour for all around city center, start from the Imperial Museum and finish at Santos Dumont's House.
