Porto da Barra is a nice small beach in the city in Salvador. It is usually busy with lots of locals visiting. There is a fort and and a church along the length of the beach. Porto da Barra is easily accessible as it is close to the city. Recommended.

It wasn't that long ago that this beach was unpleasant due to broken pavements, grubby facade fences, stinking porta potties and a lot of unsavoury characters hanging around. This has all changed for the better. A generous infusion of state and local funding has resulted in tremendous improvements in all aspects of this beach. So much of this area has been rebuilt as to seem like a totally different beach experience altogether. Now you can enjoy a cool suco de coco while watching an aggressive match of futevolei. Rent a barraca and cadeiras and go for a swim for relief from the tropical heat.

On a Sunday the beach was packed. It was, however fun strolling over to the lighthouse taking in the Salvadorians at play.

Barra Beach is a truly great place. Go during the weekday and it is calm and not too crowded. You can go for a swim, walk along the pier/promenade, have an Açai Energetico or Casadinha at the excellent Toca do Açai, and visit the nautical musuem. Do some shopping too while at it...There are an excellent selection of bars and even though you feel it getting more "touristy", there is enough of a mix with locals to keep it interesting.Better still, on the weekend it transforms into a market with food/clothes/artisan stalls and an influx of locals that gives the place a great energy. One of the highlights of Salvador.

There's nothing special on this beach. The only beautiful thing you can see there is the sky, but that's the same sky in the whole city, right!?During high seasons, just run away from it, it's so crowded that you can't even walk on the sand, terrible! Go to Villas do Atlantico, Stela Maris, etc. They're farther but much much better!

This beach is more popular it seem is more crowed then Farol da Barra beach and smaller. It is on the river side and is protected by reef few waves. Did not spend much time there seem nice with Umbrella and seats for rent. The street in front is busy with cars but nice sidewalk along the beach. I prefer Farol da Barra beach more beach to explore and both waves and reef protected beach.

In spite of the waves and the cloudy weather the beach was crowded as all Barra, but it was really beautiful to watch all these people having fun.

Porto da Barra is located in the city of Salvador and is at the mouth of the Bay de Todos os Santos. There is a small colonial fort at one side and a church on top of the hill. Porto da Barra is the site of Bahia’s first European settlement and there is an old village which still occupied.

While staying in the Barra area during out time in Salvador, this was the closest beach to our hostel. The first day we tried this beach, and arrived before it was overly crowded, but by mid-day there was barely even room to walk between people, let alone try to swim at all. It's a beautiful beach with lots of great restaurants along the street and the fort at the end of the beach is pretty. In the end, I'd recommend checking out this beach and the fort, but walk a little further to the beaches on the ocean side of the peninsula to actually stop and relax - much larger and less crowded at least when we were there.

This was at #3 in the Guardian's top beaches of the world some time ago. I can only assume that the writer had confused it with another beach of the same name elsewhere. It is a tiny strip of sand between two small rocky outcrops with an old fort/church on them. The water is clear (usually) but the big drawback is that it is so crowded and you can't relax for two seconds because there are dozens of hawkers trying to sell you stuff. 3rd best beach in the world??? It's not even the 3rd best beach in Salvador.

I was told this was one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but I would definitely have to disagree. It's a very nice beach with fine sand and very warm, salty waters. In fact you'd have a hard time sinking in the water. It's conveniently located right in Barra, so you an walk to it from many spots around. Most other beaches are much farther away. It's a very small beach and extremely cramped during busy hours. Most people rent a chair and/or umbrella from one of the many vendors. The two of us went with our towels and struggled to find a spot to but them down. Street foood vendors come by often, and much of the open beach is used by folks juggling a futbol. The drop-off in the water is fast, but the swimming is fantastic. I could have stayed there for hours. You can swim out to a stone platform that comes off an old building and do some pretty nice dives off of it. Or you can just watch the local kids do their acrobatic magic. In the background of the bay are all sorts of vehicles -- sail boats, tankers, paddle surfers. For a couple of hours, it's a nice getaway. But more than that would be tough. You have to be very careful with your possessions. And when the tide comes in, it comes in fast so everyone starts moving up the beach almost on top of each other. This beach is worth visiting, but I wouldn't keep going back to it when there are many nicer beaches further away.
