While looking online for pet friendly outback holiday destinations - we happened upon a web site for Kilcowera Station. After some reading - we were convinced this was the place we wanted to experience - Our regret was only planning three days there! Toni and Greg Sherwin are the owners/hosts of this magnificent 120,000 acre station in the far SW corner of Queensland. The journey is only 1,000 Klm from Brisbane and can be done in a day if you like to drive but two or three days allows time to see the sights along the way.The add showed the accommodation, and camp sites or if you have no camp equipment - the shearers quarters which can accommodate those coming with just the 4x4 and their clothes. We chose the camp in the grounds of the shearers quarters and be near hot showers. Kilcowera is home to many native birds some of which I've never heard of. Self drive tours using their station maps are a great adventure or a tour in the station 4x4 can be arranged as I did. The area is vast and Greg's knowledge appears endless. In a day we visited Lake Wyara which is home to vast numbers of migratory birds and animals, a cave used in early days by a shepherd and various bores and water holes where native birds can be seen. This place is relaxing. Quiet walks along station tracks are bound to have you at the ready with a camera as one never knows what will hop/slither or fly across your path. The best for us was a tour with Greg around the property and the night sky seen undiluted by city lights while sitting beside a fire with a glass of Red! The camp kitchen is used often with Greg being the cook/chef - his roast beef dinners are hearty and the deserts home made - which can be followed by another glass of something! All in all a very relaxing but adventurous holiday away from the crowds. All advice on getting there can be obtained by calling. Thanks Toni & Greg - we hope to visit again soon - once was not enough.
