This place was a real find. We always enjoy quirky little hometown museums & this is a particularly fine example (& not so little) We thought we might spend half an hour & have an ice cream but there is so much more to see out the back that we had at least a couple of hours. There are great big chunks of history- aboriginal, settlers, mining, agricultural, educational & social- transplanted here complete. So much information is available, both with the artefacts & from the staff, who are nearly all volunteers & absolutely committed to the place & very knowledgeable about it. Didn't know this was a big tobacco growing area. It is a tremendous place to get an quick education about the history of the area & is marvellous for children as they are encouraged to be vigouously hands-on.We could hardly tear ourselves away. It was so much fun chatting about all the exhibits with the volunteers. Thanks chaps!Leave a nice donation & write in the visitors book to show you appreciation

Operational clothes dryers and telephone systems.Definitely worth a stop over and quite a lot of interesting stuff all for a donation. Probably the best attraction of the area (specially since I am not a coffee person).

We unexpectedly spent almost three hours here. So, have plenty of time up your sleeve. The museum is free, but there is an opportunity to donate as you see fit. The place is almost like a full scale replica of the good old days. There is so much to see and read about the tobacco industry that was so fundamental in Mareeba's history. We thoroughly enjoyed this visit. Like most things, you get out of it what you wish. I couldn't imagine just breezing through this place though.

Great local history lesson of the region. The struggles over the decades can be seen in the many static displays. The staff at the centre are both knowledgeable about their area and very passionate about there work as well. This Museum is run mainly by local volunteers. Well worth a visit if you are in the area where there is much more to see and I am sure the volunteer staff will tell you all about the attractions in the area. A gold coin donation is all that they ask for entry or even better exit when you have seen their great displays.

a really wonderfull place to learn all about mareeba and the tablelands a nice bike ride from familys house ,we went several times while staying in mareeba and the staff r a font of knowledge and never to bsy to talk to people ,learnt so much while there and u can even get a cup of coffee ,while we where there they where building more attractions ,since been told all finish so while you there give it a go and ask for david he will help sure u dont miss anything

I've been to some museums in my travels, both in Australia and overseas, but the Mareeba heritage museum would have to rate as the best Regional Township Museum in Queensland.There is so much to look at and learn about Mareeba and its district, you will need a lot of time.The staff were helpful with other attraction information and the whole museum complex is Free, we gave a good donation...the visit was really worth it.

The Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre has a very interesting collection featuring the social history of the local area covering Aboriginal history, Early settlement, early Explorers to mention but a few. It is well laid out and you can easily spend two hours exploring. There is a great display about the tobacco industry which ceased in 2004. Lots of outbuildings, a working schoolroom and a dairy shed. It is free of charge and open 7 days a week.The staff at the Visitor Centre is very helpful and friendly. There are plenty of souvenirs to take home. It is located in a shady park with plenty of benches and tables so bring a lunch and watch the birdlife. Next door to the Visitor Centre you will find a great little shed full of handmade craft made by the locals

Great displays from almost every aspect of the regions history. Allow the older visitor to get nostalgic for a simpler time and the younger visitor to wonder what life was like back in the day. A lot of historical everyday items that have vanished with modern life.

This museum was a fantastic way to spend a couple of hours whilst in Mareeba. It was really great to read and discover the region's history as you were taken back to that period in time. The volunteers happily offer their knowledge and personal experiences as they wonder throughout the museum. Really glad that we stopped here - the kids enjoyed the ambulance hospital! Would've been happy to pay an entry fee, it was that good!!

Situated opposite the Jackaroo ( and highly recommended by Sarena ) A lot of effort has been put in by Vounteers to creat a well and informative look at the local history from the Aboriginals to the present day -- and all their were asking was for a donation !! A must see for anyone passing through Mareeba

This place is at the back of the tourist office and is gold coin donation,and it's so well looked after ,so many interactive things for the kids and so much fun,can't believe its free! Lots of information about the local history well done
