Julia Creek is a pretty little town located 137km East of Cloncurry, heading along the Flinders Highway towards Richmond and the "Dinosaur Triangle."We stop at all visitor centres along our travels as the staff are always friendly and provide great information on things to do, see and where to eat.You must stop and see the "beneath the creek" attraction and view the nocturnal house with the iconic little Dunnart that lives here.There is also a nice little museum and shop.

The information centre here is very good.We had rump steak and sausages from the local butcher and it was excellent! Lady butcher too.Best steak we have had since Crescent Head!

The young lady running the centre was friendly and helpful.A nice museum and also a very good photographic display behind the Council chambers across the road.The Dunnart seemed happy in his small home and came out to be fed when the clock chimed ten.Think it was a two dollar donation to see him.

Julia Creek is a small town in the heart of north Central Qld. What it doesn't have in size is made up by the large heart of the council here. I am writing this review as, what is known in Australia, as a 'Grey Nomad' traveling this large continent of ours in a self contained motorhome. This council is very forward thinking in its view of the traveling market and has set aside a large and comfortable area down along the banks of Julia Creek for self contained travelers use. You can stay free of charge for 96 hours and then can stay and extra day in the local caravan park for the cheap cost of $15. The council also supplies free push bikes for the travelers use so they can pedal into town. This initiative brings in the travelers by the hundreds and all of the businesses in town benefit as the travelers then spend their money there. Each Monday night a local group puts on a camp dinner at the caravan park at a cost of $10 a head with all the profits going to this 'non profit' group. In town you have two supermarkets, not large but more than adequate and the usual array of other shops, cafes and pub. What also sets this little town apart from its peers is the fantastic, modern little information centre. There are rooms with great audio visuals on the people, the town and the country. For a $2 donation you can see the local Dunnart of this area be fed twice a day. More audio visuals are down in the Dunnart display. Plus you can go on a nature walk, historical walk. I can only say ... "Well Done Julia Creek" and thank you.

Second stay at Julia Creek, first time in the caravan park 2 years ago which was great and this year went out to the Creek free camp, permit required at the site, not the Information Centre as printed in the Camps 7 Book, lovely quiet spot.

Friendly, helpful staff and fantastic information on the local area and surrounds. Great interps of the local area eg mining, farming, lifestyle but the highlight was definitely the Julia Creek Dunnart. What a cute little character. Daily feeding at 10am and the highlight of our long drive from the Territory to the coast.

This visitor centre is very well presented.A good mix of Artefacts, Photo's & 'The Julia Creek Dunnart'. He is fed at 10a.m. most days, well worth spending 20 minutes watching him in action.The staff were very friendly & informative.
