tyrconnell outback experience

The 32 kilometres from Mareeba are a lovely and fascinating drive which we did in the dry. Under these conditions, any normal car is more than up to the unsurfaced road that developes. The scenery is spell binding! There is so much more to this place than could ever be imagined from old mine buildings, machinery and workings that are around. We had a superb dinner in the most fabulous and open surroundings while our overnight accommodation was outstanding. The attention to detail with everything by Tony and Sheilagh missed nothing. Get there before it's discovered because it will be.

We recently (11/08/14) visited the historic Tyrconnell Gold Mine as part of our tour of Cape York with Tagalong Tours Australia. This place is a real little gem in what seems to be the middle of nowhere, but is actually not that far from Cairns. Our tour of the site had been prearranged by Paul Stafford of Tagalong Tours Australia and was one of the highlights for us of the trip itinerary. The resident husband and wife caretakers were welcoming and gave us a very knowledgeable and entertaing history of the mine and a demonstration of the old stamping machinery actually working. There is a camp ground and 3 cabins as part of the property for overnight stays, although our group did not use those facilities as our itinerary took us elsehwere for that night.If you are in this area (about 125kms West of Cairns in far North Queensland), we would thoroughly recommend a visit to the Tyrconnell Gold Mine if time permits. We're sure you won't be disappointed. The cup of tea was great too!John & Fiona
