Absolutely fascinating. We had a long chat with the manager, Chris, and a guided tour from the volunteer guide, Ian, who was knowledgeable and helpful. What a shame there were no other visitors - this is a quite stunning heritage property. Thank you.

This is the cottage where renowned explorer Hamilton Hume spent his golden years.Known for the Hume and Hovell expedition, Hamilton Huge settled down in this cottage with his wife after his exploring days were over.Managed by the National Trust of Australia the volunteers gave us a personal tour of the Cottage, and while they sincerely cared about the house they did not seem to be very knowledgeable about Hume's life.It was a big strange since both me and my wife felt that we would probably have enjoyed it more if we had time to read the information boards ourselves instead of being shepherd around the house by the volonteer.Anyway, it was a great visit and a lovely place if you are interested in Australian pioneering days and the early explorers.

En route to Yass we saw the sign for "Cooma Cottage" and the place was open. However, when we arrived at the place, it was closed. We were able to walk around the grounds and see the old homestead from the outside but it would have been interesting to also see the interior. We later learned that it is open on a volunteer basis and sometimes no volunteers are available. Too bad because it looked like an interesting touristic stop.

it was very interesting but under utilized thank God for those dedicated volunteers but the national trust should be ashamed that they are not pouring money into this classic icon and historical building. I think the story needs to be upgraded to include all the owners of the property and also something on the story of the aboriginal people that lived there .

interesting place, nice lady telling historical stories about house and occupants. on Historical Trusts list. geneology was as important as the structure built. Pastoral setting. not all fixed up either -- essence of days long gone.

Another well presented property by the National Trust. As you wander around the property, you can image sitting on the verandah of yesteryear looking out over the beautiful scenery that is possibly the same as you see today.

We were shown around the property by Brian Johnston an excellent volunteer guide who knew a great deal, not only about the house, but also the life and times of Hamilton Hume. We were able to appreciate just how determined an explorer Hume was, and how he had an impact on the local community in his later life. The buildings are interesting as they contain furniture appropriate to the period when Hume was in residence. It is a disgrace that government is so miserly in providing funds to maintain properties such as Cooma Cottage. These are important parts of our Australian heritage, and so much more impactful than any photos of the past.

A bit of a surprise, the home of Hamilton Hume is a few km outside Yass.Built in the 1820's its in mostly excellent condition and a great example of buildings from that era.$7 entry fee to the National Trust, well worth it.

A very good look at how explorers Hume & Hovell did it way back then. Amazing the big old cottage still stands today! Take a walk through all of the rooms - some with antique furniture & fitting and check out the dark basement cellar. You can even start the Hume & Hovell walking track from here but allow a few days at it is over 400kms through the great Australian bush with free campsites along the way. Take plenty of water though! Enjoy.

Drove there on the way back to Canberra. Waited for more than 10 minutes for the place to open at 10am on a Sunday but there was no one there. Would have liked to look around. Unfortunate that we were there at the wrong time.

Cooma cottage is a fascinating place to see how people lived way back. Some incredibly well known historical figures have a connection to this grand old house. The National Trust is slowly working through restoration and the tour is worth waiting for.Perfect for anyone even slightly interested in the Australian pioneer days.

On a recent trip to Yass, we decided to have a look at Cooma Cottage. The Cottage belongs to the National Trust and is completely run by volunteers. We were given a guided tour by Rick who provided a detailed insight into the cottage and the lives of Hamilton Hume and his wife Elizabeth, in spite of the fact that many aspects of why or how things were built cannot be explained as they were never documented. It really brought home how easily parts of history can be lost and how important it is to preserve what we have. Well worth a visit and thanks to Rick for a very interesting tour.
