A beautiful river system to cruise by on a boat, or go wake boarding, knee boarding, fishing or doughnuting. One of NSW treasures and deserves more exploration than just Brooklyn.

Lovely locations and stunning scenery. Hawkesbury river at Brooklyn is pretty tacky. Tourist borne and suffers as a result. But lovely to visit if you are a nature lover.

The Hawkesbury River is over 120kms long. The "Hawkesbury Gateway" starts at the entrance to Broken Bay at the Pacific Ocean and covers the lower part of the Hawkesbury. It is just 55 mins north of Sydney and can be accessed by the M1(f3) motorway or by train to Hawkesbury River Station at Brooklyn. There are many tributaries to explore at this wide expanse of river and the best way to see it for first timers would be a cruise on The Riverboat Postman (bookings essential), or a short regular ferry trip to Dangar Island - a lush tropically inspired residential island with no vehicles, as well as some scenic walking around the village of Brooklyn. The "Hawkesbury Valley", steeped in history, encompasses areas west of Wisemans Ferry and is reached by car or train to Windsor in Sydney's outer north west.

I enjoyed a peaceful visit to Hawkesbury River. The steep gorge country and rocky outcrops highlight the beauty of the water. This is a perfect spot to go picnicking, camping or boating. Highly recommended.

Hawkesbury River is one of the best waterways I have ever experienced.Hawkesbury River is a wonderful sight - a wonderful river that can be very tranquil or great for doing things like getting a river boat at Brooklyn and enjoying a few days away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The is accommodation to stay and hire a boat and venture onto the Hawkesbury. Your time will be well spent as the Hawkesbury has a unique appeal.

Good for a few reasons - it is the prettiest part of the trip from the city to the Central Coast or Newcastle and the view from the freeway across the waters is quite magical. In a practical way, it is also good as there are toilet facilities and a rest stop which breaks a long journey

Doing the trip between the city and central coast so often is close to unbearable - the traffic on Pacific Highway and Pennant hills road is getting worse and while the 3 lane motorway is easier now, it is still a boring trip. The only relief is when you cross the Hawkesbury River and it is still a wonderful sight - a wonderful river that can be very tranquil or great for doing things like getting a river boat at Brooklyn and enjoying a few days away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
