Thanks for your great comments iwasere. North Head is a great spot to visit - there's heaps of interesting military history up on the headland and check out the beautiful views of the harbour and northern beaches from the lookouts.

Hi AussieSteveR, thanks for your comments about your recent visit to Nprth Head. Opening soon is the Defence of Sydney artillery display, which will be part of the Tunnels tours running each Sunday. It has a fascinating display of artillery from different periods. Check out the tours times on the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust website.

It is amazing that this is so near homes. You can see wild life and the bush. I played here as a child 50 years ago. It was my playground.

Having done Manly Scenic Walk in March 2014, we expected the same experience. Unfortunately, it was not. Aside from a short walk through the beach at Spring Cove before we headed into Sydney Harbour National Park, most parts of the walk was on the road. After the national park, we made a slight detour into North Head Sanctuary. From there, we got on a new path and came to the entrance of North Fort. We then broke away from the path to continue to Fairfax Lookout point. Spent approx 15min at Fairfax Lookout before making our way back to Manly Wharf by bus 135. We decided not to complete the loop because of the rain.If you are planning to walk the whole way, bring loads of water and snacks. Since the walk is mainly on road and among houses, opportunities to purchase food/water are far and between. Don't forget your sunscreen, sunglasses and cap. Most parts of the walk are not shaded.Would we come again? Perhaps but not on foot. For pictures taken during the walk, go to - http://arazlin.blogspot.com.au/2014/12/north-head-scenic-walk.html

Drove up to north head, parked the car ($4) all day and headed off on the Fairfax walk. It was an easy walk and a different way of looking at the harbour and the coastline. Even though it was a warm day it was quite blustery. There is public transport (bus) to the site. There is a small cafe upon entering the site.

Hi springy87, thanks for your comments about your recent visit to North Head, Visitors are able to walk to the Fairfax Lookout through the North Head Sanctuary which takes you off the road - the walk has a great variety of flora and fauna and two spectacular lookout to the city and Northern Beaches. Plus it is much safer! North Fort is a historic military site, and tours of the the WWII tunnels run every Sunday.

I would recommend the walk up from Manly via Shelley Beach. Continue past the beach and up over the headland. You will see some old gun turrets and emplacements during the walk but eventually you arrive at the old Artillery School. There is a parade ground and a visitors centre where you can learn more about the history of the area. Big map available and the curator was more than helpful.Well worth wandering about the site and eventually making your way to the Buena Vista Café out towards North head.Lovely bush walks and a chance to learn more about Sydney's war time history.

On this occasion we did the Flint and Steel track, which starts at the top of the hill and winds its way down to the beach. I would rate this track as one for experienced bushwalkers. There are some rough patches and some climbing over rocks. I would not recommend this track for anyone with bad knees.

Drove up there to have a look. To be honest it's a fairly standard lookout. The views are great , id recommend on going on a really good day. I wasn't blown away to be honest . But then again I do come fromNZL... Probably why

been here twice and never got tired of this place especially when your walking with friends or having a moment of being alone and thinking about life. what could i say more. i used to live and manly and when i first came here im just wowed. the cliffs basically are the highlights for me. clean place and well maintained. i think safety is not a major concern especiallly if your walking by day. and spring season is the best time to go here!! just love it

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights are really enjoyed the experience. The location and history of Q Station are really quite unique. Tucked away at North head it is really peaceful and the views and surrounds are beautiful. We stayed in a deluxe queen, which was nicely furnished and very clean. Be aware that not all rooms have their own bathrooms!! Many have shared facilities not far from the rooms, but not recommended in the cold of winter. This is an historical site and well worth a wander to read up on all that happened in its 150 year history as a quarantine centre. You can pay for guided tours and ghost tours (which I hear are quite spooky). We ate at both onsite restaurants. The Boiler Room down by the waters eage serves lunch and dinner and we had a really delicious meal there one night. We had a buffet breakfast one morning which was reasonable, but nothing outstanding. Manly is only 5 minutes drive away and well worth a visit. Walk into the national park from Q Station and enjoy the walks with spectacular views of the coast and harbour. Be sure to go for a night walk around the property to see the native bandicoots. You cannot drive your car into the site, but a shuttle makes continuous loops from 7am to 11pm. We only ever waited a few minutes for one to arrive. We really enjoyed just sitting on our veranda soaking in the peace and beauty. I'd say this place is not for everyone, but we sure did enjoy it!

It's definitely well worth the visit by foot and you can find out about the military history of the site along the way!

There's also the friendly staff at the North Head visitor centre who will have a map of the walking tracks in the North Head Sanctuary.
