Always love stopping here when traveling in this part of the world. Nice and relaxed to the point of horizontal, friendly and informative locals and great snacks n coffee. A great place to use as a bass for exploring this lesser known part of Tassie. A must for those seeking to get away from the crowds of tourist buses :)

We went on the Adventure day tour 1 September. The tour was well organised, and our tour guide was very knowledgable and helpful. You start with a ride on the rail track tider, a peddle powerered cart running on the old unused rail track. Don't worry if you cant peddle for long, they have a powered car that comes along and pushes everyone along if you slow down. It was lots of fun and great scenary along the way. After morning tea we headed up to the Styx tall forest for a guided tour. Lunch is late, around 2:00 up on top of the mountain at Eagles Eyrie. The Eyrie is an amazing structure with 360 degree view of the entire region. Lunch was a selection of Tasmainian produce and wine, beautifully presented and well proportioned. Great day trip from Hobart.

The Top of the World tour to Eagles Eerie is a beautiful half day tour. The Rail Rider was great fun for us all (ages 9 through 70). Then we went by bus to a secluded spot in the bush for morning tea and a short walk through the trees. Next we travelled up to the Eagles Eerie for a beautiful lunch in the spectacular South West Wilderness World Heritage Area. Great day out for people looking for beautiful views and friendly, knowledgeable guides together with a tasty lunch. The Rail Rider was quite tiring but you could get pushed if you didn't want to peddle so it would suit all ages.

The Top of the World tour to Eagles Eerie is an amazing half day adventure. The Rail Rider was great fun along a very pretty section of old track. Then on the bus to a mystery spot in the bush for morning tea followed by a walk through the beautiful Styx rainforest where our guide explained the difference between a true rainforest and an emerging one. Then we travelled up to the Eagles Eerie for a beautiful lunch in a building designed to take advantage of the spectacular views across the South West Wilderness World Heritage Area. It was cloudy but that just added to the beauty of this amazing place. There were 8 on out tour and we all enjoyed it. At $100 per person it is expensive and out of reach for families. I wonder if they lowered the price they may get more people as it would hardly break even with less than 10 on the bus. We were very late booking but the people at the Hub were very obliging and got us on the tour on time. we only booked 15 minutes before it left. Would not recommend that! Book ahead! The overall experience was great and we topped it off by staying the night at Strathgordon.

Our tour began when our tour guide took us to the 'Rail Rider' site where we and a number of others pedalled our way along an otherwise disused railway line. This was a lot of fun and everyone appeared to enjoy this. Surprisingly we were the only two people on the full tour and we parted company with the others after the ride. Our tour guide took us through the Styx forest pointing out the various species and points of interest including abandoned logging machinery from the past.We eventually arrived at the ‘Eagles Erie’ which was a well set out modern building perched on top of a mountain. When we saw the panorama 0f the mountains around us we gasped in disbelief. The scene was incredibly beautiful. We kept walking around the building exclaiming “Wow” at every vantage point. We ate a satisfying gourmet lunch with a glass of wine (included in the package) with a backdrop of the most beautiful scenery we have ever seen. We could scarcely believe that we were the only people on the tour. Though we live in Tasmania we were gobsmacked by what was within easy driving distance from Hobart. The tour and the guide were excellent. We discovered the tour through our ‘Entertainment book’ which contained discount vouchers for various businesses. Otherwise we had not heard of the tour even though we live in the Derwent valley. If we were to criticize anything it would be the poor signage on the roads. We did not come across a sign advising the distance to Maydena until we were nearly there. This would not be good for tourists. We saw a large sign just out of Bushy Park advertising the tour and it struck us that the sign would be better in a place like New Norfolk where tourists looking at options in the Derwent Valley area would see it. Perhaps it has been better advertised than we are aware of but the fact remains that we had been unaware of the tour though we lived about one hour by car from Maydena. In summary the tour is fantastic for those who love the wild natural beauty of Tasmania. The Forestry Dept. has an absolute gem in this tour and if managed properly it will be a great drawcard for the State and will benefit businesses in the local area. i

We booked this tour for $80 each which began at the adventure hub (a shop/cafe/booking centre). We were first taken on the railrider which began in the back of the town and went to a forest walk/interp centre. Then bused 20 mins up a mountain to another interp centre in a fantastically designed and appointed building perched in the middle of know where! The views were amazing, atmosphere eerie and the fascilities world class. We were given a great lunch and then bussed back to the adventure hub!. It was quite surreal. I would have preferred to skip the railrider and have more of a forest/4WD tour of the surrounding Styx/Florentine forests and spend more time at the eagles eyrie. I fear for this tour and building as it is under utilised and may become an expensive white elephant for Forestry Tasmania. It could be used for seminars, education, functions, even Weddings! Not sure it's being marketed corectly, felt it was plonked there to give Maydena something to do!

Great tour and locally run. Geoff and his crew are very friendly and know their local history. Good workout as well with the pedaling if you like.
