I was attracted to this field - is that what you call a place where you ski cross-country? - because unlike many other small fields, here most of the trials are groomed for skating as well as classic. That said, many of the blue and black trials are pretty damn difficult for skating because as soon as the gradient steepens, the trail is simply too narrow to climb using a skating style and you end up using 'striding herringbone'. Which is slow going. After lunch, I stopped trying to skate elegantly and just concentrated on solving the technical challenge of forward motion and staying upright, switching pole plants from one side to the other with the camber and seamlessly switching to herringbone on the steeper sections. And that reduced the frustration levels considerably. My companion had a great day on classics - including some steep descents that were not for the faint-hearted. Thanks to advance warning from the staff, I took easier options. And that was the best part. The staff were lovely. Helpful, friendly - they brought out deck chairs for us to recline on and recover over lunch. The prices for a day pass and for the drinks and limited food on sale were very reasonable. Attractive shelters and small lodge. Off the beaten track perhaps, but all the better for that. The grooming was a little rough for skating - look on this as adventure skating rather than competition level and you will have a good time.

The hosts welcomed us warmly into the chalet. They guided us to the trails that best matched our skill level, and had excellent rental equipment. There are warming huts along a few of the trails which are lovely for baks. The trails are immaculate, and the woods pristine. Definitely a satisfying alternative to the madness of downhill -- much more coordination required! The tranquility of the woods is marvelous. The location is fantastic as we were only 15 minutes from the great restaurants in Ste Adele. Highly recommended.

MERCI!
