Don'e be put off by the warehouse exterior. This museum gives you the flavour of Canada before, during and after European contact from the vantage point of human-propelled watercraft. Go to Peterborough Ontario and visit the Canadian Canoe Museum. A prime minister's buckskin jacket beckons.

It's a very well done museum that explains the important role canoes played in Canadian history. The exhibits present lots of information. It was very empty when we went but seemed to have lots of hands on activities for kids. It is somewhere you should explore at least once especially if you have ever done any canoing or camping

Went here for the first time in the summer of 2014. Went for the kids special event "Touch a truck" - both kids loved that and we hope they're going to do it again - great experience. Went in the museum after they were done playing with the trucks and even though they were getting tired and almost at the end of their rope they still had a blast learning about the exhibits. Would probably learn more and be better for them if we brought them when they were a bit older (1 & 3) and when they weren't already tired/getting worn out. Either way they still had lots of fun exploring and there were lots of activities/kids friendly things in the museum for younger kids that were hands on.

A Canoe Museum? I thought it would be boring... quite the contrary! This is a thoughtful, interesting and extremely well designed exhibit. Rather than focus on Peterborough's (significant) role in canoe and boat building, it gives a panoramic view of Canadian history, which also (finally) includes the Canadian Arctic. This is well worth a visit, and more than once. There is also a charming gift shop with unique items.

Canoes, canoes, and more canoes! All with related stories and even photo ops. Includes extra exhibits of living in the wilderness. Also on exhibit: Pierre Trudeau's fringed leather jacked and his canoe.

Like taking the kids here - they've really adapted to have lots of hands on activities for kids so that they learn something and have fun too. We also went for their 'touch a truck' event last summer and the kids loved exploring all sorts of different types of vehicles.

This museum is a must see if you are in Peterborough! I have driven by it several times and from the outside it does not look very impressive. Once you enter indoors, I felt like I was walking thru exhibits at the Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec. One can see the history of Canoes, how they are made, life of Aboriginals, sit inside of a Teepee, see some artifacts of Pierre Trudeau, and even talk to some artisans as they make kayaks and Canoes. They also have a children's centre where kids can draw and make some artifacts. Admission is $10.50 for Adults and it may be free on Thursday (we went on Sunday) but it was well worth it. I would budget about 1.5 hours to thoroughly see the museum and enjoy the experience. Reading about canoes and Aboriginal life in a book may be interesting to some, but seeing the artifacts up close is awesome. I would not mind going back again and suggest anyone young or old visit it.

We went to the museum, and it was fun dressing up and taking pictures at the various scenes. Some real interesting artefacts. There was no problem getting our stroller around the museum. Best part is that it's free Thurs nights!

This gem of a museum is world class to say the least. It specializes in self propelled water craft from all over the world, from Olympic sculls to aboriginal canoes, kayaks and dug outs. The collection is enormous when one considers how the museum specializes. There is of course local and national history to complement the watercraft and establish why these craft were so important in building Canada from sea to sea. Who knew that the Voyageur canoes were giants? The Peterborough area was remarkable in terms of how many canoes were manufactured there. Also, a visitor might be lucky enough to watch a local artisan manufacture a birch bark canoe. I have enjoyed three visits to the museum, once with students from Japan.
