A nice piece of history to visit. Does not cost anything to just view the boats coming into the locks. Actually took my grandson to Lock 1 and followed a ship thru the Canal up to Lock 7. But Lock 3 has the best view and you can picnic there is you wish and view the museum as well

I had always driven by and heard about if but finally went last summer and it was a very pleasant surprise. Very interesting. We even got to watch a ship in the lock which was very cool! I highly recommend this to everyone.

A nice little museum showing the history behind the Welland canal as well as some other artifacts from St. Catharines and area. In addition, the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame is housed in the same building. In the summer, you may get to see an ocean going vessel go through the lock on which the museum is situated. Great to take kids through because it's small and informal and there's lots of play area outside.

Great place to stop and walk the dog and use the rest rooms. We watched the 12 minute movie to learn about the locks even though they weren't operating late December. they had a special War of 1812 exhibit at the time that was interesting. Friendly staff, great gift show and the 12 year old and 14 year old enjoyed the break from our road trip to Niagara Falls. Not far off the highway.

We could have spent hours here. Seeing a big ship going through the lock was incredible. The history of the making of the canal provided insight into how the area developed. On the down side it rained the day we visited the lock and Museum.

My husband and I just moved to the area, and were pleasantly surprised to find out we are walking distance from Lock 3. This a must visit to see the boats go through the canal. They have a nice museum, and an area to have a picnic.

Very nice museum and gift shop, very good viewing area for the locks, easy to find, nice place for families with children.

Museum well laid out and informative. Great parking and also good place to enter the bike trail passing by. The viewing center platform gave perfect spot to watch ships transverse to canal. They display the schedule of ships inside the building. Don't fail to go.

We were too late for the museum, but had the opportunity to watch a big laker travelling up the canal, enter a lock and then rise up from below us to tower over us. Literally an awesome experience.

Alas! We reached the museum 10 minutes before closing. I still managed to get a gander at the exhibits and plan on returning to take my time. I found some of the accompanying descriptions to be much more interesting than in some other museums I have visited. Not only are there exhibits about St. Catharines and the Welland Canal, there is also the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The staff I spoke with were very friendly and helpful. I understand that the second floor contains more exhibits and the Lockview Lounge for watching the ships go through Lock 3 which is located outside the museum. Should you wish to view from outside, there is a viewing platform. (As there were no ships going through while we were there we chose to wait for another visit to use the platform.) This is worth seeing as the Welland is a ship canal. The museum accepts donations rather than ask for a set fee.

If you want to learn the history of the canal and experience a boat go thru a lock--stop here. So much history-wonderful pictures and displays. Just wait and a huge ship will use the lock.

This lock is the best one for a view, you literally stand right beside the lock (safely in a fenced elevated walk area which is handicapped accessible through the museum by elevator) You actually get to watch the whole process of the ship entering the lock, the doors closing and the water level adjusting for the ship too proceed either up or down river, and then the ship exiting the lock.

This was a great site to see. We saw two large cargo ships (over 600 foot long) go through the lock (one upstream, one down). The first was a ship from Poland picking up a load of coal.We then had to retreat to the viewing area inside because of rain to watch the second ship. The museum was very nice and well run for only accepting donations.

Seems to be fairly new but still interesting. There was history, education, information and the cost was reasonable as it was a donation. Did not know it was there until we were in the area and it was a worthwhile visit.
