This may have been the highlight of our week. It is so incredible to have these beautiful little creatures hummingbirds) sit on your finger while they drink sugar water from a small container you're holding. For nature lovers this is a lovely break from the resort scene. Its a bumpy last mile or so up the mountain, but well worth it.

After seeing the pics and reviews of this place on tripadvisor, I was excited to visit and feed the birds. We were on a southern Caribbean cruise that stopped in Falmouth, Jamaica, one day, about an hour's drive from this bird sanctuary. At most ports we easily hire a taxi and quickly get to our destinations. Not this day. The "official" taxis at the Falmouth port would not go there, even though their posted sign said you could choose a custom tour. One driver said we would have to stop at a police station first and tell them we were going there, IF she decided to drive us. That didn't happen. It took an hour and discussions with three different taxi groups before we could get someone to take us up to the bird sanctuary. We had to get a taxi from downtown Falmouth. Keep this in mind if you plan to visit on a port day in Falmouth. It was quite a waste of time.I wanted to feed the birds, my husband only wanted to photograph them, ideally in a natural setting, feeding on flowers. That didn't happen. The birds ate from feeders in a small darkened area at the porch. He was disappointed. The resident guide wanted more money to take him out to a more natural area. We didn't expect that and it put a sour note on an experience that should have been fun. One tip for taking pics of birds feeding from a bottle: Wear a solid, light colored shirt. The dark dr. bird and others will stand out dramatically.

We were the only visitors one mid-afternoon in January, and we had ample time for the unique experience of having the local swallow-tail hummingbirds land on our hand and feed from a sugar-watered bottle. It's a low-key, intimate place. On the way, you can admire the thick jungle on the mountain slopes. As we were leaving a very small group arrived. Well-worth your time!

Even if you aren't a bird nut, having an absolutely stunning hummingbird land on your finger to get a drink of nectar from the little bottle you are holding is MAGIC! The Red-billed Streamertail is found only in Jamaica and with its long tail and beautiful green and black feathers, many consider it one of the most beautiful of the hummers... and it is the national bird of Jamaica. We also had Jamaican Mangoes - another endemic hummer land on us to feed. The feeders are frequented by lots of other native birds. It is a photographer's dream. Loved it so much I went back on my "free day" before I had to leave. I need to bring my kids here someday!

This was an amazing and unique experience. We sat down and within 5 minutes were hand feeding the beautiful humming birds. You have to be patient but it is such a worthwhile experience - we all loved it. Highly recommend as a fun and educational outing for elementary aged kids. We loved it - thank you, Oliver!

This tough to find sanctuary is truly worth the (expensive) drive there....you are given small bottles (look like airplane bottles of liquor) filled with sugar water, and the hummingbirds feed from your perched finger. The tour through the bush area did not yield many additional bird sightings, but was still beautiful.

My family and I went to Rocklands Bird Sanctuary on January 7. We fed the Swallowtail Hummingbirds and then Mr. Aaron took us on a short tour. He pointed out birds and lizards and identified each plant and tree--telling us about each one. We were surrounded by birdsong and by flitting jewel-like birds. It was a magical experience. Even though Jamaican tourism officials warned us not to go there,we found it to be a serene, safe and beautiful place overlooking Montego Bay. It is a tiny hidden treasure on the island of Jamaica.

We decided to take some Native friends to see the humming birds. Even having locals with us, it was an adventure to find, but WELL worth the effort. The view of Mo Bay was spectacular. Then, the minute we got in our chair, we were constantly having varying types of humming birds attempting to feed, although we didn't even have any feeders in our hands yet. Truly an amazing adventure, with many other types of local birds feeding at feeders set up all over the grounds. There are trails and alternate seating areas throughout the grounds. A relaxing and enjoyable time for all, Jamaican's included.

Fantastic views of the streamertail hummingbird. You get to hand feed them! This is a quiet and quaint site for the birder and nature lover alike.

This place is out of the way and not on most vacationers' to-do list but it should be! The experience was really quite relaxing and awesome. Getting to this place is an adventure in itself going up a steep hill with no paved road but ending up near the top of the hill with an incredible view of Montego Bay. On our day there was no one there but a couple of men who provide a very brief tutorial of hold this bottle of sugar water and extend your pointer finger in front of it and sit. We did. Hummingbirds darted in and out of our shade covered area as we sat in colorful plastic chairs and waited. The time actually seemed to fly by but after 33 minutes a bird stood upon my finger and drank some sweet nectar. Had I not been looking at my finger I would not have felt this weightless bird but there it was. For a bit less than a minute I sat looking at it with amazement. This bird so unafraid of the 7 people sitting around pointing fingers. Two of them were children running away afraid of the Doctor Bird. Yet still over the next two hours (which seemed to go by quickly) we sat enjoying bird after bird periodically choosing a finger to squat upon as it enjoyed a drink. My father, ever the bird watcher, went off with one of the guides for a walk around the grounds and discovered 4 birds he had not seen before. The kids tried to catch a puppy who was too fearful of people to do more than sit and watch us but run if we appeared too close. Had I not been with others I could have stayed there for much longer. The peacefulness of the place was broken only by the periodic bark of a dog and our discussion each time a bird landed on one of us. I suggested resting elbows on the chair's arms will alleviate any arm fatigue. Also, we arrived around 3pm and had the place to ourselves. I believe the fee was $20 per adult and $10 per child. It is a bit steep but to keep the place running and with so few people making the trek it is worth it! There aren't going to be many who experience this as you brag about it to your friends later. Don't avoid it because of the expense. This is too unique to bypass.

If you are a nature lover, this is a must do. We got there early (before 10,) and the guide was welcoming and friendly. We immediately sat down to hear the history of the place, and were given the bottles to feed the hummingbirds. We fed several, and got to see many more flying around and eating. Afterwards, we learned about many of the native plants around the area and what they are used for. Would definitely do again. Take a camera! Although I wasn't quick enough for a picture, the birds will zoom up to take a look at you and hover by your face when you are walking around.

What a haven of tranquility! Birds would come and eat out of my daughter's hand. My kids were fascinated with this place as my wife and I were. We will definitely return when we go back to Jamaica.

While in Jamaica recently, my daughter and I visited Rockland's Bird Sanctuary and had a fantastic time. We were not there at the ideal time but we still each fed two hummingbirds. It was amazing. They are such beautiful and graceful birds. However, you must have patience. You sit quietly for a while and then they seem to appear out of nowhere and land on your finger to feed. There are all sorts of birds to see and lizards too! We had a guide (who I am ashamed to say that I have forgotten his name) who took us on a tour and answered all our questions about the different birds and the plants and trees on the property. It was a very quiet, thrilling and totally unique experience. If I go back to Montego Bay, I will visit again.

This is one of those things that you just have to experience if you love Hummingbirds. They land on your finger and drink from the little bottle that they give you. This is run by a man that worked for the women that stated this place at her house. Nothing has changed but the women has passed on and the man that worked for her still runs it. The women's family does not live there or care for it. They give the man a small pay and he lives there and takes care of the place and gives the tours. The money for the tour go's to the family and the upkeep of the grounds. Please tip him because he takes very good care of the place so that people can enjoy a very rare thing. I got to see Mommy Hummingbirds on there nests and the little bitty jelly bean sized eggs. Amazing. ( it was spring)

If you are a person who loves birds , then you will like this place! My husband and I enjoyed the guide and his "Here birdie -birdie!" calls actually worked and within minutes, a doctor bird flew right by us! I had a hummingbird land on my finger and I fed it sugar water, very cool! A funky, off the beaten path kinda place. For the bird and nature lover.
