Great skiing for a few days. Snow is excellent, lifts efficient no queuing. Quantity of skiing is a little limited but there is a good variety of slopes.

Decent ski resort with fairly cheap passes. There is a 4-hour pass that you can buy for about 4,000yen. The mountain is quite nice, with some gates to access extra terrain up the top. They seems quite relaxed about 'out of bounds' and many places don't even have fences. There is a huge, super highspeed gondola which is very handy. The only negatives would be that there is just one lift that connects the two sides of the mountain. And when riding back there is a long flat spot in the transit.Food was reasonably priced, and decent, and the staff were super friendly. Definitely recommend it if you're in Hokaido!

Beautiful, quiet, great powder snow, and not crowded at all! Furano is definitely the place to pick is you want to experience a relaxing ski experience far from the busier resorts like Niseko. Just th trip by train in the white countryside of Hokkaido is worth the trip.

We decided to spend a few days at Furano Ski Resort to get more traditional Japanese experience. The surrounding town etc was quite enjoyable but the skiing itself was awful. You can only ski/board long groomed runs which are not that steep at all - mostly beginner and intermediate. No off piste skiing and the tree's are so tightly packed you have no choice but to stay on the groomers. We found it to be very boring and would not recommend for anyone other than skiers or a beginner snowboarder.

As a specialist group we mostly skied in the trees and off piste. Having said that we did spend a couple of days skiing the groomers and exploring the resort. So much variable terrain and not many people. If you have a few days then spend them at Furano. The staff are very friendly and courteous and the variety of runs is magnificent. This resort will suit any level of skier.

As a group of five snowboarders and one skier we found the Furano ski area to be the better of the two options based out of New Prince Hotel. For a start in was right at our doorstep we found more interesting terrain on the top to chairlifts to explore. The bottom of the mountain can be busy with school groups but they are easy enough to avoid. We di a fiar amount of skiing under the ropes on the side country of the resorts and never encountered any trouble. With new snow this place was outstanding still being able to find fresh powder after a couple of days if you new where to look. I would go back to this resort again.

Fresh snow fall every couple of days (or nights) and well-groomed runs. Not particularly challenging but enough runs over both areas for sufficient variety for one week. Better skiing in Furano zone but stayed in excellent Tsuru Appartments in Kitanomane zone so able to ski right back to base at end of day from highest area of mountain (Panorama Run and then Link Run). Decent vertical, no lift lines and good cooked Japanese and Western food for lunch at Restaurant Downhill at top of Furano Ropeway. Rare Cheesecake very popular here. Hire skis new and staff helpful. Japan snow always very reliable. There are some opportunities for off-piste powder. Snow quality is great and good views across valley from the mountain.

Furano is one of largest ski place in Hokkaido. It is not that crowded compared to other ski places nearer Sapporo. It is suitable for the experienced skiers as well as beginners. However, I have found the main building to be a bit old, particularly the toilet. There are two restaurants in the gondola terminal. Most people go the 2nd floor where the chairs/sofas are more comfortable, but it can be very full from 12 noon to 2pm.

We skied in the second week in January (4 - 9th). This early in the season is always a gamble - some years you will have great snow and other years snow cover is still building up. Reviewers who went in the weeks prior to this have commented on the relative lack of snow. This can happen at any resort at this time of the year. Experienced skiers know this and will accept that they are taking a risk when booking an early season holiday. Our first day was a "bluebird" day with sunny skies and fabulous views. Most of the resort was open, but snow was patchy in places. (This won't bother you if you are on hire skis.) The following day it started to snow, and it continued to snow, on and off, for the rest of the week. Conditions improved enormously and we enjoyed light, dry, fresh snow. So we were lucky! Other Hokkaido and Nagano resorts, which had had great early snow, experienced rain whilst we were in Japan. there are NO guarantees with weather! Some runs are left ungroomed so that skiers can enjoy the "freshies" each morning, and indeed throughout the day if it is snowing heavily. Other runs are very well groomed (top notch corduroy). Good skiers will be able to ski the whole resort easily in a day, and so a change in conditions adds interest (enjoying the views/ photography on sunny day and enjoying the fresh snow on snowy days.) However, we found that 5 days was more than enough as this is not a big resort.Trips to nearby resorts are available, but seemed very expensive. This could be a good way to break up your week though. Tree skiing looks a bit tight and is mostly out of bounds. Midweek, there were no lines or crowds and the slopes were fairly empty. The Kitanomine Gondola did not open until 10 am except when the upper chairlift wasn't working one morning. Skiing between the two halves of the resort was straight forward with a couple of run outs that required tucking and possibly a short skate. Snow boarders may find these transitions more inconvenient. We liked the small, quiet township of Kitanomine. (We stayed across the road from the main slope, at the Naturwald Hotel - highly recommended.) Great English speaking ski rental service at Sportpia (main Kitanomine building.) We walked to local restaurants each night. We also had a free guided tour on our first morning - arranged through the visitors centre in the main Kitanomine building. Our guide was lovely and spoke great English. This was a pleasant way to explore the resort. However, it is easy to find your way around anyway - ask for an English map. Signage is also in English. Eateries were few, but plenty of space. We liked the restaurant at the top of the Ropeway on the Furano side.Western skiers seem to have found this place, but not in large numbers. The other westerners we saw were mainly family groups. We saw no gangs of young party animals as there is nothing at this resort in the way of nightlife. (A couple of quiet bars is all.) This suits us just fine. In summary this resort is very easy for English speaking, non Japanese skiers, but has not been over-run by westernised businesses like a couple of other well known resorts in Japan. We enjoyed combing our visit with a stopover in Asahikawa to visit the famous Asahiyama zoo.

Resort was a bit old fashioned to others in Japan in a good way. Heaps of snow and although lots of school kids lines were under control at liftsGreat ski hire place at old prince, good gear and service. Our traveling friends had young kids and hadn't skied before, they had lessons from same ski hire place and also all good

Furano skiing was very varied. First day boring in a crowded system with stones popping up everywhere. Third day after a good dump of snow one of the best days skiing for 40 years. You come to Furano for the snow, not the system. The whole system was not open while we were there. Slip under the ropes and you will find unrivalled powder. Our stay would not have been so great if it would not have been for Sportpia rental shop located in the Kitanomi part of the system. Excellent english spoken and everything was possible to solve, except the lack of snow. Flexible with changing between board and skies, and piste skies and fat off piste skies. The Kitanomi part had less skiers and better snow during our stay than the Furano area. The lift queues were none existent except just before lunch when they were less 5 minutes long. The Kitanomi gondola opened the last day while the prepared slopes were closed on the top so it was unprepared powder that many could not handle. I will come back later in the season another year and hope for more fresh snow.

I've stayed in Furano ski resort from Dec. 24 to 26. However, the half of ski courses are closed due to shortage of snow, on the other hand, Sinfurano hotel where I stay are fully booked, and then a lot of ski fans come here, I have to wait quite a long time to get on the rifts or ropeway. Although there are many snow in Niseko, I think it's no good to ski in Furano in Dec.

We came to furano for 2 days just before Christmas. Only 1/2 of 1 of the 2 mountains was open. The snow was fluffy but there was not very much of it, hence 3/4 of the mountain was closed. My biggest complaint is that the crowd control was very poorly managed. There were multiple high school student groups there which all went up the chairlift one by one instead of seated in twos. That makes the line go half as fast! The line for the gondola to the top was also very slow. 25-35 minute wait. It only takes 10 minutes to get down the mountain if you don't dawdle. With a full day pass from 7:30 to 3:30 on the gondola that means you get 8-10 runs if you don't eat lunch, and have spent 3/4 of that day in line. My advice for the money you spend to ski in Hokkaido is to go to Rusutsu. Our experience there was completely opposite - huge snows, no lines, 2 mountains open. At the same time of year, except in 2013. Furano has better restaurants as there is actually a town, but for the skiing, we found furano lacking.
