I couldn't visit Upper Bhawani Lake during my recent visit. I was confused by various reviews posted about the lake. I tried to do my bit of fact finding and below is what I found out:1. Local tour operators normally don't take you to Upper Bhawani Lake.2. They take you to Avalanche (name of a place).3. There they show you Lakkdi Lake, Emerald Dam & Avalanche Dam & there backwater lakes.4. However you miss the Upper Bhawani Lake.5. For upper Bhawani lake you need special permission from Forest Ranger.6. His office is in Ooty.7. You need to give details of the vehicle which will take you to Upper Bhawani Lake.8. After obtaining this permit only you can go to upper Bhawani.9. It's about 65kms from Ooty on Manchoor Road.10. Tell your cab driver clearly about the Upper Bhawani lake you want to visit else you will land up at Avalanche.11. Though Avalanche is a very good place but wanting to see Upper Bhawani lake when you land up somewhere else you are heart broken. So take care friends. For Avalanche see my review on the specific page....Happy travelling.....

After acquiring special permission we went driving through and it was such a beautiful drive with stunning views. The terrain and vegetation of the hills here is unlike anywhere else in the Nilgiris. So its beautiful and baffling at the same time. A must visit as there aren't many tourists to bother you. The lake is beautiful and from atop looks like a painting...because it's so perfect and beautiful.

As already mentioned by someone most of you are talking about the backwaters of upper bhavani and avalanche. Most of you it seems have missed going to the upper bhavani reservoir. After reading the blogs we were unsure whether we needed any kind of permisssion from the forest department. But due to lack of time we just started from coimbatore to upper bhavani. We dint want to stop at avalanche or emerald. Started at 9 and reached near upper bhavani at 2. We were stopped at the checkpost and told to return back since no one is allowed without DFO permission. Dejected we headed back. After about 5 kms we spotted a TNEB official car. We had a small chat with them and as luck would have it forest department chief was in the car. He told us to follow his car and thus we gained entry to upper bhavani. Bhavani reservoir is 12 kms from the checkpost. It was unbeleivable. The whole environment changes. It was like entering into jurassic park , huge mountains , beatiful waters and no trace of civilization. When we reached there, we were just out of words. This spot is not to be missed. Crystal clear waters. You can see TNEB planning and powerhouses. Water goes from upper bhavani reservoir to kunda to pillar and ends at bhavani sagar in ooty. Water is used for generating electricity and this reservoir supplies coimbatore ,ooty and part of kerala Things to do to enjoy your visit here 1. Get DFOs permission from ooty to visit upper bhavani reservoir 2. Get TNEB permission for staying in their guest house ( there are 2 suites , charge is 500 rupees per room. a private butler is available who will cook you what is available. you have to pay the cook separately. the view from the guest house in worth going there again and again) 3. Trek through mukurthi national park and Bangitappal ( closed for the past 2 months due to Terrorist activities in this region) Thanks to forest chief Mr Altrin and Mr Arockianathan for this wonderful trip

As mentioned in many comments it's best if you take the first bus. Bus charge is Rs. 300/- and they also have a provision of jeep which will cost you Rs. 1200/-. So make sure that you get there early enough to get the bus which leaves as soon as 15 people get in. It takes around an hour and a half to get there and also there are three more attractions on the way where you can take really good pics. Upper Bhavani Backwaters is the last stop and they have truly saved the best for the last. The bus takes a 15 min stop there and that is enough time to take beautiful snapshots of the lake as well the pine forest. I can guarantee that the memories of the beautiful lake will stay with you for a long time as such views are rarely seen in India.

It is rightly the number one sight seeing spot in Ooty. I could not have believed such a place existed in India.Make sure you catch the first forest department bus which leaves at around 9:30 am to enjoy the beauty of the lake. After that, it would be very crowded. The lake looked beautiful and the water was so pure as if it was a reflection of the sky.It is a must visit point to experience the calmness of the place.

The route to upper bhavani reservoir is a feast. One must take permission from forest department in OOTY before proceeding for the trip. It is a must visit place and the only place i liked in ooty. All others are pretty crowded and regular places.

If you reach late, you will be caught in the endless wait.If you reach early, you will be able to ensure a ride to the lake in the first trip. There are trips in govt. vehicles ( at 10, 12 and 2 pm). Each trip lasts 2 hours where you're shown different sceneries like the Sholas, the lake, etc. They're all unbelievable, and their grandiosity takes some time to sink in.What is more easily attractive is the experience of reaching early and basking under the filtered light of the sun coming from between the pine tree leaves while lazing on a bench made out of pinewood is just priceless. The calm is interrupted only by the chattering of monkeys or clucking of hens that routinely scour the forest for worms :) If you follow them, you'll find yourself next to a placid lake ( not the one from the above tour) amidst pine trees. Feast your eyes.At 9:30, the small canteen run from the hut next to the ticket counter opens and you can order lemon tea, and 'bajjis' (fried chilli/brinjal nuggets). They're all worth it. One word - Go.

We were searching for Avalanche lake and ended up here. The last 4-5 km is through a bumpy deserted jungle road. Access for private vehicles are allowed only upto a point. Beyond this you will have to take a jeep (6-seater; Rs. 1200) or a government authorised van (approx. 25 seater; Rs 150 per head). Private vehicles are only allowed with special prior permission. We took a jeep and our driver was from the Toda tribe. Being a local, he was very knowledgeable about the area. There are two other stops on the way to the lake ((i) forest with trees shaped like cauliflowers and (ii) a temple). The drive to the lake took us about 45 minutes -1 hour. The colors are breathtaking - blue and green water, combined with clear blue skies. If you are lucky you might find some wild animals on the way - we did not find any. It was not as crowded as the other places in Ooty. A must-visit.

If you are in Ooty.., please visit this place. You nee to hire a jeep or get govt bus tickets to get in there. The lake is awesome.
machtourism
This is one of the most remote and unspoilt destinations in the Nilgiris. It is 60 km from Ooty and one can access it from another route if heading from Coimbatore. This is a very big water body and is on the head waters of the Bhavani River. The river originates nearby and there is a small temple dedicated to the Goddess of the River. The river then flows to Kerala and then re enters Tamilnadu and later forms vast dams like Pillur and Bhavani sagar before merging with Kaveri at a town that itself is called Bhavani near Erode. The reason for the place being so pristine is simple – it is out of bound for mass tourism; we require permission from Forest Department or you have to be part of the conducted day tour of the Department. One has to keep places like this intact as it is a fragile bio diversity hot spot and part of Nilgiri Biosphere.

Absolutely memerising nature.....wonderful lake....undisputedly the best in South India. The entire journey from Ooty is an awsome experience. Take care of the timing since no other vehicle is allowed to enter Avalanche Reserve Forest except Govt. vehicles.
