If you are already visiting Casco Viejo stop by and take a look. Beautiful architecture and very well preserved. It's located close to a charming plaza with several trendy restaurants.

We had some major luck being able to go inside the Teatro Nacional. It is usually closed, but due to a dance recital getting over, we were able to go inside with our tour guide (while doing a city tour). Really really pretty!! Looks like it should be in a movie. Glad we got to see it. Ive traveled a lot and never been inside a place quite like that. You can tell it's taken cared of and loved. And the AC was PERFECT!!! It was humid outside and going in, was a nice respite! NICE!

You should try to find out what activities are taking place at the Teatro, it is worth seing it when there is a clasical music concert or a play. If you get cold easily make sure to bring a jacket. Dont forget to look up at the ceiling, an amazing fresco paint of our panamienian Robert Lewis decorates it.

My daughter had a kindergarten play performed here so I did not expect much. Wow was I impressed. Very well kept up theatre with a very old world feel. Balcony seats were great, but it appeared there isn't a bad seat in the house.

Saw "Les Miserables" in this amazingly beautiful theatre.....strange to hear all these beautiful songs in spanish but.....definitely worth seeing!

This is worth a stop for a few pics as you explore the Casco Viejo Unfortunately it wasn't open when I visited and so wasn't possible to go inside. But looks quite good from the outside in the sunlight.

I had the oportunity to see the Ballet Folclorico de Panama. The show was unique; original, musical and colorful.

I always enjoy visiting the Teatro Nacional both in tours by day and performances at night. The theatre is an historic ornate building first opened in 1908 in the historic Casco Viejo district. It is definitely worth taking a look inside during a tour. It is still being used as a venue for local performances so it is worth attending a show. Last night my girlfriend and I had the pleasure to see an opera entitled "Carmen y otros Gitanos" with the National Symphony Orchestra. After the show we enjoyed a nice meal and drinks in Plaza Bolivar. While visiting Panama this is a must see!

It's not always open but when in Casco it is sure worth it to go inside. If you are staying a while you may want to see a show here just to be in this recently restored theater. Thank Heavens they saved it! Some of hte best things to see in Panama are not well advertised as people (unlike the Costa Ricans) are not good here at marketing the beauties of their own country.

As mentioned by other reviews, the old Town is in the process of being restored to it's former glory, thankfully. The best way to experience the national theater, is by attending a performance of the National Symphony Orchestra, if you are lucky to be visiting when they are in town.I could not find an internet link for their schedule, but ask at the theater, you may get lucky. This is a grand property, in a fantastic setting. Just keep in mind, it is an area in transition. Very much like an open air museum, that you get to enter free of charge. Have fun.

The theatre stands within the Casco Viejo or Old Colonial City area, which is itself a must-walk-around and juxtaposes rooflessly ruined homes with those gorgeously restored. The theatre itself - not great in size, not grand in presence.

From the outside it is not much to look at. Go inside. Walk around. Take your time to look at the seats, the walls, the ceiling.
